Pailin(Khmer: ប៉ៃលិន) is a city and province in the west Cambodia on the border to Thailand.
background
Pailin is known for its rich deposits of precious stones (sapphire and ruby). In Thai is Pailin even entered common usage as a synonym for “sapphire”. The place was - long after it was ousted in the rest of Cambodia - one of the last bases of the Khmer Rouge. From 1994 to 1998 it served as the seat of the "Provisional Government of National Unity and National Rescue of Cambodia" (PGNUNSC), which is not recognized by any other country in the world.
Two of the most famous Khmer Rouge leaders, the chief ideologist and "Brother No. 2" Nuon Chea and Foreign Minister and "Brother No. 3" Ieng Sary, lived here completely undisturbed for many years. The two were arrested and tried in 2007. As part of the peace negotiations, Pailin became a special zone from the province Battambang spun off, since 2008 it has formed - with the neighboring Sala Krau district - its own province, which is also called Pailin. It is the second smallest province in the country.
