background

The province is named after the Cham people, an ethnic minority whose large part of the population lives in this province. In terms of size, the province ranks 11th in the country, but already in second place in terms of population. One of the most famous sons in the region is Cambodia's current Prime Minister Hun Sen.

The Cham people

The Cham占城, Pinyin: zhānchéng, (Vietnamese: Chiêm Thành) are a Muslim minority in Cambodia, Vietnam and parts of Thailand and Laos. In Cambodia itself, the ethnically incorrect designation is also encountered Khmer Islam. Approximately 500,000 to 700,000 people of the people who originally came from the Kingdom of Champa currently live in the country. The Cham are mainly of the Sunni faith. They speak their own language, which also has its own script. Many live in Kampong Cham Province and in the Mekong area to parts of Kratie Province and the capital Phnom Penh. Some other groups can be found in the provinces of Kandal and Kampong Chhnang (more about the Cham ...).

getting there

The journey takes place with the bus or automobile. The RN 7 leads from Phnom Penh through the province to the neighboring province Kratie.

The Boats on the Mekong have meanwhile stopped their traffic. The national road, which has now been expanded, has shifted traffic to the asphalt. An arrival with the plane can not. The airfield northwest of the city is out of order.

mobility

An increasing proportion of visitors to the province and its capital are choosing to drive mopeds themselves to explore the wide area around the city and the province. As a rule, you get motorcycles with up to 250 cc. Larger machines are recommended for long distances across the country. If you are planning a trip to Vietnam with your vehicle, you should consider that you cannot enter the country with machines with more than 150 cc.
