It represents one of the main tourist centers of the Balearics, appreciated for its beaches, entertainment and nightlife; full of hotels and tourist villages often with international entertainment.

When to go

Palma de Mallorca enjoys a Mediterranean climate with an average annual temperature of 17 ° C. The coldest month is February, the hottest August.

Background

The name Palm tree it dates back to the Roman settlement on the ancient nucleus of the present city, even if the area was originally already inhabited during the Bronze Age. In the Middle Ages it was first conquered by the Arabs, who called it Mayurqa Madina and in 1229 by Jaime I, king of Valencia and Aragon, becoming an important commercial city. Palma saw its dark age in the 16th century, when it experienced a significant demographic decline caused by Turkish and Berber pirate attacks and plague epidemics. It will last until the 18th century, when Felipe V changed the government making Palma the capital of the Balearic Islands. Later, Carlos III entered into a free trade pact with the Indies, which had a huge and positive financial impact on the island.

The city became a tourist destination in 1950 and the number of tourists steadily increased over the next half century. Palma is an active commercial and cultural center of Mallorca and more than half of the island's population resides in this autonomous region of the Balearic Islands of Spain. The holiday season generally starts from May through October, and November through April. Temperatures vary between 20/28 ° C and you may need a heavier item of clothing for the evening.

In Palma de Mallorca, during the 19th century, maritime traffic intensified with considerable economic growth for the island. Today, Mallorca is one of the most important tourist destinations in Europe, with many tourists from all over the world. Palma is a modern city, with large hotels, shopping areas and a lively life, but it is still an old city that still retains much of the ancient architecture, such as the old town with narrow streets, and the magnificent cathedral.

Safety

  • Beware of pickpockets when walking around the center. They can even steal loose change from your back pocket!
  • If you stop at any of the many terraces in the center, keep an eye on your valuables and never leave them unattended.
  • You will probably find women offering flowers around the Cathedral. They will do their best to take what they can. If you see them, ignore them.
  • The people in Mallorca are Catalan and not Castilian (or Spanish). Avoid jokes about it that could be construed as supporting the government of Madrid.
  • Italian troops were stationed in Mallorca during the 1930s. The Franco regime thus baptized a road and erected monuments in their honor. However, the local populations have been less hospitable and there is still some residual resentment. If your Italian origin comes up during the conversation, don't be surprised at an abrupt interruption.

In most areas of Palma it is safe to walk around even after dark. Visitors should refrain from wandering alone at night in the empty and narrow streets of the old city and El Terrain. The latter is the homosexual area of the city and can be quite seedy; it is also known for attracting drug users.

Keep in mind that Palma de Mallorca (like the other Balearic islands) is full of "group drugs". Extasy, cocaine, marijuana, and are more prevalent around clubs. Beware of drugs such as GHB, ketamine, and others that can be introduced in drinks (especially in sangria in restaurants). Possession of drugs for personal use is legal in Spain (less than 500 doses), but trafficking is illegal.

Keep all valuables out of sight, such as wallets and purses, or well hidden in pockets. Any excess cash, cards, passports and documents of value are best left at the hotel for added security. It is always best to take a taxi late at night, especially if you are alone. Use your common sense to stay safe.
