Palmerston North is in the Palmerston Plains, a plain between the Tasman Sea in the west and the mountain ranges of the Tararua Range and the Ruahine Range. It is traversed by the Manawatu River. The place is called "Palmerston North" to distinguish it from the place Palmerston on the South Island in the region Otago.
