Pfaffenheim, around 15 km south of Colmar, is a village on the Alsace Wine Route, in the heart of the Alsatian vineyard.

Understand

The village, whose origin dates back to the Roman, even Celtic, period owes its name "Papanheim" to the numerous presence of estates belonging to convents and monasteries. Current research tends to prove a previous presence on the site, the "priests" being able to be "druids".

The wine trade was to be flourishing: indeed, there are many "patrician" houses dating from the Renaissance and of which there are still magnificent towers sheltering dressed stone staircases. The village also had three “castles”, which were more like “strongholds” and of which unfortunately no trace remains.

Who says wealth, says covetousness, and Pfaffenheim paid dearly for this lavishness of nature since the village was destroyed three times: in 1338 by the armies of the Emperor of Bavaria in struggle with the bishopric of Strasbourg, in 1444 by the Armagnacs, and in 1525 during the Peasants' War.

  • 1 Saint-Martin Church Logo indicating a wikipedia linkLogo indicating a link to the wikidata element – it deserves an in-depth visit, both for the neo-Gothic style nave, typical of XIXe century, than for the old choir dating from the beginning of XIIIe century and whose design recalls the choir of Basel Cathedral.
  • Teufelstein rock  – a legend of XVIe century attributes the scratches of this rock to the devil who, when the Schauenberg chapel was enlarged in 1515, wanted to throw it on the site. Suddenly softened, the stone could not have been lifted, hence the presence of footprints and its second name of "devil's stone".
  • Druids table  – called the "table of the druids", the dolmen is located near the Schauenberg. Its presence can confirm the thesis attributing Celtic origins to Pfaffenheim, whose name could also be translated as "home of the druids".
