There Tokyo prefecture (東京 都 Tōkyō-to) is an administrative region of Kantō.

Geographical notes

The western part of the prefecture corresponds to the suburban cities known as the "Tama Region" (Tama-chihō).

Tokyo prefecture also includes a large number of small islands, some more than 1000 km from theHonshū.

Urban centers

  • Tokyo (東京)
  • Chōfu (調 布) - Famous for the Jindai-ji temple, the Jindai botanical garden, the Tokyo soccer stadium and for the presence of the laboratories of the Japanese space agency JAXA.
  • Fuchū (府中) - Many shrines, temples, historical sites and relics. Ōkunitama Shrine, Tama River, Mount Sengen, Tokyo Hippodrome, Suntory Brewery in Musashino, Wholesale Market, City Museum Park.
  • Hachiōji (八 王子) - Where Mount Takao is located, a suitable place for a breath of fresh air outside Tokyo.

  • Tama (多 摩) - The self-proclaimed "Hello Kitty House" and its theme park, Sanrio Puroland.

Other destinations

  • 1 Izu Islands (伊豆 諸島 izu shotō) - An escape from Tokyo within a reasonable distance, with its volcanic hot springs and wild dolphins.

How to get

By plane

  • 1 Narita International Airport (成 田 国際 空港 Narita Kokusai Kūkō IATA NRT) (located 70 km northeast of Tokyo, in the prefecture of Chiba.). Although the airport is quite a distance from the city, there are plenty of options for getting from Narita to Tokyo. The most common methods are express trains to Tokyo's main train stations and Airport Limousine buses that go directly to major hotels.   • 2 Tokyo International Airport (東京 国際 空港, Tōkyō Kokusai Kūkō, HND IATA) (is located in the Ota district, very close to the central areas of Tokyo). The busiest airport in Japan and the second busiest in Asia, it mainly serves domestic flights but also a growing number of international flights, mainly routes with heavy commercial traffic.   • Daily flights from Haneda Airport to Oshima (35 min ¥ 13,170), Miyakejima (45 min ¥ 13,170) and Hachijojima (50 min ¥ 19,870) with All Nippon Airways (ANA)

Tama region
  • Take the JR Chuo Line from Shinjuku o Tokyo to most places in the Tama region including: Kichijoji, Kokubunji, Tachikawa, Hachioji and Okutama.
Islands
  • Keio Private Line for Southern Tama Region to: Chofu, Fuchu, Tama Zoo Park, Hachioji and Mount Takao.
  • Three flights per day from Chofu Airport to Oshima (35 min ¥ 9500), Kozushima (45 min ¥ 15,870), four flights per day to Niijima (40 min ¥ 13,700) with New Central AirService. To go to Chofu Airport, take the local Keio Line service from Shinjuku to Nishi-Chofu.
