Railay (also: Rai Leh ) is a settlement on a peninsula in the can only be reached by sea Krabi Province. The village consists of the parts Railay East, Railay West and the Phra Nang Peninsula. The main attraction is the beautiful beach surrounded by karst rocks. There are a number of hotel complexes. If you don't go on a pure beach holiday, you should visit the place as a day trip from Ao Nang or Krabi visit.
getting there
A journey from the mainland is not possible due to the high surrounding mountains. The only option is to travel across the water by boat. The price from the neighboring moorings Ao Nang in the west and the bay in the east is usually 100 baht per person. Suitcases are sometimes to be carried through the water, and Thai people also help. Many boats end their tours at 6pm in the evening.
If you want to try to hike along the banks of the rocks, you should remember that standing areas are only available from time to time and only at low tide. At high tide, the endeavor could be life-threatening.
Tourist Attractions
- The 1 Phra Nang Shrine, in a small cave, right at the end of the beach, with numerous phallic symbols. Phra Nang is a female guardian spirit or deity revered by the locals, around whom various legends entwine. The phallus-shaped wooden figures are offered to her to appease her or to wish her a blessing for a good fish catch or a child.
- The 2 Phra Nang Nai Cave (also Diamond Cave), Entry 100 baht. A not too big but beautiful cave with colored illuminated stalactites and stalagnites. Bats sleep there in two places during the day.
- 3 Princess Lagoon, a lake 70 m in diameter and completely surrounded by rocks that may be 30 m high. Only 200 m away from the main path, but a sometimes dangerous tour of over 20 minutes on rocks with many natural gripping possibilities, also along ropes and lianas. 80% incline up and down. The view over the lake as if into a little paradise rewards the strenuous effort. Sturdy shoes are definitely an advantage, even if many people try to wear flip-flops.

Stay
There are a number of beach resorts in Railay. However, due to the difficult accessibility, it makes more sense to move to another part of Krabi (e.g. Ao Nang) and visit Railay for a day than staying in Rai Leh for a longer period of time and exploring the surrounding area from here. Accommodation in Rai Leh is only recommended if you are planning a pure beach and relaxing holiday. The price level is relatively high. Simple bungalows with fans and cold showers are available from 675 baht per night, middle-class hotels start at around 1500 baht.
