Ko Lanta(Thai: เกาะลันตา) is an island in the south of Thailand in the province Krabi. The island still has a cozy flair - also due to the fact that there are no large multi-storey hotel buildings on the island. There are a number of beaches with beach bars and bungalow complexes. The number is now inexhaustible. Nevertheless, the island does not seem overcrowded. It is well developed - but not a party destination. In the interior of the island there is nature to explore in the national park and interesting diving and snorkeling spots can be reached by boat as a day trip.

Historical
Over 500 years ago they settled Chao Ley (Sea nomads) the island first. They wandered from island to island on the sea. They come from the Urak Lawoi and likely come from the Bandah Aceh region, Indonesia. About 200 years later, Muslim communities immigrated from Malaysia and Indonesia. The Chinese followed 100 years later. Traders, tin workers and fishermen came and the island developed. Lanta Old Town was mainly settled by Thai-Chinese families and still has the only Chinese shrine on the island.
Backpackers discovered the island in the 80s of the 20th century and tourism began to develop. In 1996 the island was connected to the mainland's power grid, and in 2001 the car ferry was added. The island was largely spared from the tsunami in 2004. Not too much damage was done. In 2016 the bridge between Ko Lanta Yai and Ko Lanta Noi was inaugurated.

Ko Lanta belongs to the Muslim part of Thailand. Headscarves are part of everyday life for local girls and women. There are several mosques on the island and there is also a corresponding element in the local cuisine (many dishes are Halal). However, the Koran is not interpreted as strictly as in some other countries, and alcohol can easily be purchased in restaurants and shops.

There are a number of beaches on the west coast of Ko Lanta. A road runs parallel to the beaches. In principle, the location follows the scheme: Beach> resorts> street with restaurants and shops> more resorts or guest houses. Towards the south the pattern thins out and everything moves closer together or is a little less populated. On the east coast there are a few settlements and restaurants with a beautiful lake view, but less accommodation. The south of the island is taken by the Ko Lanta National Park. The main part of tourism therefore takes place on the west side. When it comes to a travel organization, however, it should be remembered that the island and thus the distances to be covered are quite large and that you should take some time to research when deciding where to settle.
West Coast
Located in the north of the island Ban Saladan, the largest settlement on the island. Not only is the harbor here, where almost all boats and ferries are docked. There are a number of guest houses, seafood restaurants and dive shops here. There is also the greatest concentration of shops, both for daily needs and for arts, crafts and souvenirs.
The beaches listed are sorted from north to south:
- 1 Kaw Kwang Beach. The beautiful curved beach with fine sand is at the top of the island and is the northern end of the following Klong Dao Beach. As the only beach on the island, it does not have a direct view to the west.
- 2 Klong Dao Beach.
The three kilometer long and also quite wide beach is certainly the best known and most developed beach on the island. Due to the size, the crowd of tourists runs away and it doesn't seem very crowded. It is fully developed with resorts and bars and there is a further selection of shops, restaurants and shopping opportunities in the hinterland. The way to Saladan Pier is short and therefore quite inexpensive. The accommodations on the beach cover the middle and higher range. Cheap accommodation - as well as the nightlife - is more likely to be found on the street and the southern beaches. - 3 Pra Ae Beach (หาด พระ แอะ).The four kilometer long beach is narrower than its northern neighbor. Since resorts and bars are widely distributed, it is perceived as extremely quiet.
- 4 Relax Bay Beach.The name is program. The small bay is hidden between the two neighboring beaches and offers a small and wide quiet beach.
- 5 Klong Khong Beach (หาด คลอง โขลง).The beach runs parallel to a klong (narrow channel) and a former coconut plantation. At the south end, fishermen tie up their boats. The beach is a bit rocky in parts, but this is only visible at low tide. There are resorts and separate bars spread out along the beach. The flair is quite cozy, especially at sunset.
- 6 Klong Nin Beach (หาด คลอง นิ น).In the northern third, the beach is divided into two parts by a canal. It is covered with coconut palms and behind it there is some rainforest. It is quite calm and has fine white sand. The northern part is more suitable for swimming because it has fewer stony areas.
- 7 Ba Kantiang Beach (หาด บา กัน เตียง).Kantiang Bay was voted one of the ten most beautiful beaches in the world in the “Sunday Times” (London). There are only a few resorts on the slightly curved beach, which gives beach visitors a feeling of peace and quiet. It is also a great place to snorkel.
- 8 Nui Bay Beach (Ao Nui)..The small, cozy beach can only be reached via a path. There is a bar on the beach. Parking is only possible on the side of the road.
- 9 Khlong Chak Beach (หาด คลอง จาก, Ao Khlong Jak)..The penultimate beach in front of the national park offers three resorts and a few bars / restaurants. The elephant trekking in the national park starts nearby.
- 10 Bamboo Beach (Ao Mai Pai)..The quiet, beautiful and southernmost developed beach is just before the Mu Ko Lanta National Park and offers three accommodations and two bars.

East coast
- 1 Lanta Old Town.The place is the administrative center of the island and has a nice little town center with shops (tourist goods) and nice restaurants that are built on the water and have a beautiful view of the bay and islands east of Ko Lanta. For travelers who are mobile (mopeds) and have the time, the place is definitely a recommendation for a half-day trip. There are also some accommodations in town. Some boats that provide connections to the islands land at Lanta Old Town's rather long pier.
- 2 Sea Gypsies Village (บ้าน สั ง กะ อู้)..The sea nomads (Thai: ชาวเล, Chao Ley, "People of the Sea") settled the area a long time ago and inhabit the coast in raised houses. They speak their own language and still maintain their old traditions and customs, such as this Loi Rueawhere boats are built and launched into the sea to send the evil away with the boats.

The 1 Krabi International Airport
(IATA: KBV)(ท่าอากาศยาน กระบี่) is about 75 kilometers from the island. Air Asia alone now flies to the city 8 times a day Bangkok off on. Other airlines are Thai Airways Smile, Nok Air, Thai Lion Air and Bangkok Airways. There are other national connections with, among others Chiang Mai. New Gen Airways operates a hub in Krabi and heads for destinations in China. There are other Southeast Asian routes to Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Penang. Qatar Airways has a direct flight from Doha off on. For ฿ 3,000 you can get a whole minivan (up to 6 people) for the trip to Ko Lanta. A taxi costs around ฿ 2,500.
Then it goes to Ko Lanta with the minivan (300 ฿) The travel time is approx. 1.5 hours. The two low-cost airlines Nok Air and Thai Air Asia offer combined flight and ferry offers from Bangkok-Don Mueang to Saladan Pier on Ko Lanta. Following selected flights from Bangkok to Krabi (approx. 1:20 hours) you will be taken by bus to the Nopparathara pier and from there by ferry to Ko Lanta. Overall, you are on the road for a good five to six hours (including waiting and transfer times). The package price per route with Air Asia is between 1,165 and 2,465 ฿ (except in the absolute high season around Christmas / New Year's Eve, then up to 4,640 ฿), with NokAir standard 4,050 ฿, savings prices from 1,940 ฿ (around New Year's Eve up to 4,750 ฿).
An alternative is that 2 Trang Airport(IATA: TST)(ท่าอากาศยาน ตรัง). It is also served several times a day by Air Asia and Nok Air from Bangkok. From there it goes by road (45 km) and by boat to Ko Lanta. A full minivan (up to 6 people) costs ฿ 3,900. The travel time is at least 2.5 hours. The express transfer (only from November 1st to April 30th) costs ฿ 2,450 per person. Children up to 12 years pay 1,225 ฿, children under 2 years travel for free. The tour takes you to the Hua Hin Pier (80 minutes) and from there by speedboat to the Saladan Pier (15 minutes). The travel time to the hotel then depends on its location (15 to 60 minutes).
If you want to travel directly from Europe, you have the largest selection of connections on 3 Phuket Airport(IATA: HKT)(ท่าอากาศยาน ภูเก็ต). Transfers from the airport to the hotel on Ko Lanta are also available for ฿ 3,350. The tour consists of a ride in a minivan (3 hours) followed by a speedboat ride to Saladan Pier on Ko Lanta. The transfer to the hotel is waiting there.
By train

Some connections can also be booked online in advance. In the towns and on the islands, tickets can also be obtained from the numerous tourist offices and hotels. There are several piers on the island for arriving and departing by boat.
- 4 Saladan Pier (at the north end of the island). A port fee of 10 ฿ per person is payable on arrival. Next to the cash register is a shelf where the free Ko Lanta Pocket Guide is available.
- Krabi - Two boats go to Ko Lanta every day. They start at 8:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. from Chao Fah Park Pier in the city and take about 2.5 hours. The trip costs ฿ 300. The boat is usually full and the luggage is piled up at the end of the boat. A few drinks are sold on the boat and the taxi ride to the hotel can be booked on the boat during the trip. The boat also stops off the coast of Ko Pu and Ko Jum. Longtail boats run as feeders. Another possibility is the connection with the minivan / speedboat via the Hua Hin Pier. The minivan takes you to the pier in 60 minutes. The speedboat then takes 15 minutes. The price is ฿ 2,450 (children: ฿ 1,225, free of charge up to 2 years of age). - Ko Jum - The speedboat ride takes 30 minutes and costs ฿ 800 (children under 2 years 500, under 11 years 560). Start is 09:45 at the pier in Baan Ko Jum. A cheaper alternative is the boat from Krabi which stops in front of the island. Longtail boats serve as feeders.
- Ko Kradan - The seasonal route runs from October 16 to March 31 and costs ฿ 950 per person (children up to 11 years 665, under 2 years 500). Start is 1.30 p.m. at Ko Kradan Beach Resort, arrival is around 2.30 p.m.
- Ko Laoliang - The ferry operates from October 16 to March 31 and costs ฿ 1,700 per person (children up to 11 years of age 1,190, under 2 years 500). Departure is at 12:00 and the journey time is 2.5 hours.

- Ko Ngai - There's a speedboat operating. The ticket price is ฿ 600 per person.
- 5 Old Town Pier. The pier has connections to the east and south. However, this is not the region of the island with the hotels. From here you either have to take a taxi (from 600 ฿) or arrange a pick-up with the hotel, but you should point out that you will be picked up at this pier.
- Ko Ngai - Longtail boats operate on the route. The price for a boat is 1,800 ฿.
mobility
Since the island is comparatively large and has a good road network, renting a scooter or car is worthwhile. Scooters can be rented from most rental companies and hotels from ฿ 250 per 24 hours, which alone is cheaper than a single tuk-tuk ride across half the island. Tourist Attractions
Ko Lanta's west coast is lined with some beautiful beaches. There are holiday resorts on many of the beaches, which you simply have to walk through to get to the beach. The further south you go, the more lonely and untouched the beaches are. The Ko Lanta National Park occupies the southern tip of the island and protects all kinds of animal and plant species. There are two large karst caves on the island, Kao Mai Kaeo and Tiger Cave, which can be visited with or without a guide. Mu Ko Lanta National Park
The 11 Mu Ko Lanta National Park was established in 1990 and consists of Ko Lanta and other small islands such as B. Ko Ngai and Ko Ma and a few more. There is only flat land near the beaches. The highest point is 488 m above sea level.

Flora: 19.4 km² are covered with 15-25 meters high rainforest. Some important representatives here are wing fruit plants and lagerströmien (curled myrtle). There are also large mangrove areas with an average height of 5 meters. But the beach areas also offer a flora with catapult trees, millettias and sea winds.

Ko Lanta ist Ausgangspunkt für Fahrten zu ausgezeichneten Tauchgebieten in der Andamanensee mit klarem Wasser und guter Sicht. Folgende Tauchspots werden von Ko Lanta aus angeboten:
- Der Name 18 Ko Haa (เกาะห้า) bedeutet übersetzt „5 Inseln“. An jeder Insel gibt es gute Tauchspots, insgesamt sind es 12. Eine zentrale Lagune bietet gute Möglichkeiten zum Schnorcheln und Tauchen gleichermaßen. Die anderen Inseln bieten für erfahrenere Taucher Unterwasserkavernen. Die Bedingungen sind ganzjährig gut (max. 50 m Tiefe, Sichtweite 15-35 m). Die dritte Insel bietet auch einen Strand und ein Kliff zum erklettern und herunterspringen.
- Die beliebte Inselgruppe 19 Ko Phi Phi (หมู่เกาะพีพี) bietet fast 30 Tauchspots zum erkunden. Beliebt ist Bidah südlich von Phi Phi Ley mit einer großen Vielfalt an Korallen, Gorgonien. Hier kann man auch gut Leopardenhaie beobachten (max. 30 m Tiefe, Sichtweite 3-25 m).
- The 20 Shark Point ist benannt nach den Leopardenhaien, die man hier oft beobachten kann. Der Tauchspot ist bekannt für seine vielen Korallen und die Vielfalt an Meeresspezies (max. 28 m Tiefe, Sichtweite 3-25 m). Ca. 600 Meter entfernt befindet sich das Anemone Reef. Das Riff ist Heimat vieler Seeanemonen und verschiedener Spezies wie Moränen, Geisterpfeifenfische und Seepferdchen (max. 25 m Tiefe, Sichtweite 3-20 m). The King Cruiser Wreck ist eine 85 Meter lange Passagierfähre, die 1997 sank und nun ein bewohntes 35 Meter breites Riff gebildet hat. Das Wrack hat 4 Decks und die Heimat von Skorpionfischen, Feuerfischen, Stachelmakrelen und Schnappern. Im Inneren lebt auch eine große Schildkröte. Die Tiefe und die Strömungen macht das Wrack aber ungeeignet für Anfänger (max. 33 m Tiefe, Sichtweite 3-15 m).
- 21 Hin Daeng & Hin Muang sind zwei Klippen/Riffe südwestlich von Ko Lanta und die tiefsten Tauchspots im Angebot rund um Ko Lanta. Sie bieten die beste Möglichkeit für die Sichtung von Mantas und Walhaien. Anfängern wird aufgrund der Strömung von dem Tauchspot abgeraten. (max. 60 m Tiefe, Sichtweite 5-40 m).
Ko Lanta ist Heimat von ca. 15 bis 20 Tauchbasen. Die meisten von ihnen findet man in Ban Saladan im Norden der Insel. Dort starten auch in den Morgenstunden die meisten Boote zu den Tauchausflügen. Zwei Tauchbasen starten ihre Touren am Klong Nin Beach and on Ba Kantiang Beach. Bei den Bootstouren sind im Preis Verpflegung und Transfer im Regel inbegriffen. Einige Anbieter nutzen Speedboote. Es gibt Tauchkurse in allen Qualifikationsbereichen, vom Anfänger bis zum Divemaster.

Schnorcheln
An fast jeder Insel der Region gibt es Möglichkeiten zum Schnorcheln. Von Ko Lanta aus sind zwei Ausflugstouren beliebt:
- 22 Ko Rok (อุทยานฯ เกาะรอก) besteht aus zwei Insel. Geboten wird eine Fläche von einem Quadratkilometer Rifflandschaft die zum Schnorcheln einlädt. Die unbewohnten Inseln gehören zu dem Ko Lanta National Marine Park. Benannt sind sie nach einem kleinen Pelztier, welches im Thailändischen Rok genannt wird. Auch bis zu 1 m langa Warane kann man auf der Insel sehen. Die Fahrzeit nach Ko Rok beträgt ca. 1:45 Stunden.
- The 4 Island Tour führt an einem Tag auf die nicht allzu weit entfernten Inseln 23 Ko Muk (เกาะ มุก), 24 Ko Cheuk (เกาะ เชือก), 25 Ko Waen (เกาะ แหวน) and 26 Ko Ngai (เกาะ ไนง). Das Highlight ist dabei die Emerald Cave (Tham Marakot). Dabei schwimmt man durch einen Unterwassertunnel zu eine Lagune innerhalb von Ko Muk. Wasserdichte, schwimmende Taschen sind daher empfohlen, um seine Habseligkeiten trocken in die Lagune zu befördern. Die Fahrzeit zu den Inseln beträgt ca. 1 Stunde.

Ko Lanta bietet eine Reihe von Wegen, die sich zum Wandern abieten.
- Wanderungen zu den beiden Höhlen Khao Mai Kaew Cave and Tiger Cave sowie zum Khlong-Chak-Wasserfall.
- An der Südspitze der Insel im Nationalpark Mu Ko Lanta gibt es einen Rundwanderweg.

Das gemeinnützige Tierheim kümmert sich um die herrenlosen Tiere der Insel. Hunde Gassi führen oder trainieren, Katzen kraulen und bei der täglichen Arbeit des Teams helfen ist hier möglich. Es gibt auch eine angeschlossenes Café.Geöffnet: tägl. 09:00-17:00. - Es gibt eine Reihe von Elefantencamps auf der Insel, die Elefantentrekking anbieten, teilweise als Komplettpakete zusammen mit einer Inseltour. Die Trekkings führen zu den Höhlen, nach Old Town oder zu Wasserfällen.
- Angeln ist in und um Ko Lanta ebenfalls möglich. Lokale Agenturen bieten Tagesausflüge sowie Nachtfahrten zum Angeln von Tintenfisch an. Es ist auch möglich, lokale Fischer direkt anzusprechen und eine individuelle Tour zu unternehmen. Im Osten der Insel befinden sich auch ein paar Fischteiche mit Möglichkeiten zum Angeln.
- sailing ist ebenfalls möglich. Einige Agenturen bietet Touren zu den umgebenden Inseln an, auch inklusive Schnorcheln und auch über Nacht. Segelboote mieten kann man aber auf Ko Lanta nicht. Das ist z. B. in den Marinas von Phuket möglich.
- Camping ist auf den kleineren Inseln der Umgebung möglich und lässt sich über einen der örtlichen Touranbieter organisieren.

Banken und Geldautomaten: An der Ostküste gibt es nur in Lanta Old Town Geldautomaten, an der Westküste nahezu überall entlang der Küstenstraße. Wer eine Bank benötigt wird im Norden in Saladan und an der Klong Dao Road fündig.
Eingekauft werden kann überall auf der Insel. Besonders in Saladan im Norden Lanta Yais und in der Nähe der meisten Resorts gibt es zahlreiche Geschäfte für Lebensmittel und touristischen Bedarf. Sonntags ist Markttag in Saladan.

Ko Lanta bietet unzählige gastronomische Einrichtungen. Von erstklassigen Restaurants und Cafés bis zu Straßenständen ist alles zu finden. Viele Gerichte enthalten Meeresfrüchte oder Huhn. Ko Lantas Küche ist stark von malaysischen Einflüssen geprägt und weniger scharf. Viele der Restaurants legen den Fang des Tages aus und bieten frisch gegrillten Fisch auf der Speisekarte an. Der Ort ist bekannt für seine Fischrestaurants. In der parallel zum Wasser verlaufenden Straße findet hat man die Wahl aus mehr als 15 Lokalen, die Frisches aus dem Meer anbieten.

Ko Lanta besitzt kein Nachtleben, wie man es in den größeren Orten und Touriustenzentren Thailands findet. Ein paar Bars gibt es entlang der Hauptstraße. Hauptsächlich aber findet man an den Stränden viele Bars und Restaurants, einige sind angeschlossen an die vorhandenen Resorts andere werden separat betrieben. Diese haben oft Liegestühle und Sitze im Sand. Einige bieten abends kleiner Shows mit Feuertänzern. Deren bewegte Lichter kann man am Strand im Dunkeln gut erkennen. Entlang der Strände findet man an der Hauptstraße im Regelfall immer eine Fahrtmöglichkeit zurück zur Unterkunft, allerdigs nicht zu später Nachtzeit. Dann muss man sich evtl. ein Taxi rufen lassen. Ko Lanta gilt als sicher un frei von Problemen mit Betrunkenen. Die Polizei ist daher auch recht nachsichtig bezüglich der Schließzeiten der Bars. Ofmals sind diese bis zum Gehen des letzten Gastes geöffnet. Kostenloses WiFi ist, wie überall in Thailand, Standard.
Ban Saladan
Der Hauptort im Norden der Insel ist kein Nachtleben-Hotspot und wird hauptsächlich zum Einkaufen und zum Abendessen aufgesucht. Dirnks und Cocktails gibt es aber in den Restaurants und Bars entlang des Flusses.

Am Südende des Strandes findet man auch ein paar Karaoke-Bars sowie Ko Lantas größte Musik-Location mit Platz für 800 Gästen, den Marlin Rock Pub.

Der Strand gilt ein Stück weit als letzter „Backpacker-Strand“ der Insel. Entlang der Hauptstraße gibt es kein erwähnenswertes Nachtleben. Der Strand allerdings bietet eine ganze Reihe von gemnütlichen Bars, teilwiese an Resorts angeschlossen, einige auch unabhängig.

Recycling
Müll ist immer noch ein großes Problem in Thailand. Es gibt auf Ko Lanta die Möglichkeit speziellen Abfall zum Recycling bzw. richtiger Entsorgung abzugeben. Einige der Objekte werden sogar geupcycled.

Diverse Travel Agencies bieten Ausflugspakete (inklusive Ausrüstung und Verpflegung) mit dem Longtail oder Speedboat zu interessanten Zielen in der Umgebung an. Rund um Ko Lanta gibt es eine Menge kleinerer Inseln mit Kletterfelsen (Free Climbing), Korallenriffen (Schnorcheln) und Traumstränden. Einer der Höhepunkte ist eine Lagune in einer Art Krater, die nur über eine Grotte bei Ebbe erreicht werden kann und von außen uneinsehbar hinter hohen Felswänden liegt.
