Ras Gharib, also Ras Ghareb, Arabic:رأس غارب‎, Raʾs Ghārib, „Cape Gharib", is a egyptian Industrial city on the African coast of Gulf of Suez South from el-ʿAin es-Sukhna and 155 kilometers north of Hurghada. The northernmost city in the governorate Red Sea with 32,000 inhabitants[1] lives mainly from oil production.

Raʾs Ghārib is a very young city that owes its rise to local oil production. 1913 were at Hurghada and discovered oil wells here on site in 1938. With the Egyptian National Petroleum Company, the former too Shell belonging Anglo-Egyptian Oil Company, operated land-based drilling rigs and drilling platforms in Gulf of Suez Egypt can produce a considerable proportion of its own oil requirements. With 150 oil wells between ez-Zaʿfarāna and Raʾs Ghārib, the most important oil production area in Egypt is located here. Today around 70 percent of Egypt's oil is produced in this oil field. A port is used to load the oil.

A modern settlement for local workers was built near the conveyor systems. Until the discovery of crude oil, only a 1871 of the local deserted place heralded Gustave Eiffel (1832–1923) built lighthouse. The population increased particularly during the Second World War. This made Raʾs Ghārib the first capital of the Red Sea Governorate, which was later relocated to Hurghada.

The city got its name from the striking 1670 meters high, about 35 kilometers to the southwest 1 Gebel Gharib(28 ° 6 ′ 55 ″ N.32 ° 54 '23 "E).

Because of the oil production in this area, bathing tourism is out of the question. And tourists are rarely seen here.

Usually one reaches Raʾs Ghārib via Sue or el-ʿAin es-Sukhna and ez-Zaʿfarāna along trunk road 24. There is also a direct connection via trunk road 27 to Benī Mazār in the Nile valley.

It is not entirely unimportant that the city has a gas station.

By bus

More than ten buses from Upper Egypt Travel run daily from Sue to Hurghada and stop in Raʾs Ghārib.

By plane

The airline Petroleum Air Services has one of its bases for its helicopter and aircraft fleet in Raʾs Ghārib. The Egyptian National Petroleum Company owns her own 1 Airfield(28 ° 11 ′ 50 ″ N.33 ° 12 '22 "E) with a 2,000 meter long runway.
