background
The reason for the creation of the region were the disputes between the regional metropolis Arica and the capital of Tarapacá region, Iquique. Arica has been claiming more independence for itself since the 1980s. Only when the law was abolished in 2004 that declared the unity of the regions established in the military dictatorship of Pinochet to be inviolable was the way for the new region free.
Apart from the capital Arica, the region is hardly populated and without any significant tourist activity.
