Castles

Roland's arch from below

Roland's Arch (former Rolandseck Castle)

  • The former Rolandseck Castle was a hilltop castle on the Rhine and, together with the Wolkenburg and the Drachenfels, secured the southern border of the possessions of the Archdiocese of Cologne. The legend connects the castle with Roland, the nephew of Emperor Charles. Today the remains of this castle are world-famous under the name Rolandsbogen.
The castle can be reached on a steep footpath at Remagen-Rolandswerth.

The Rolandsbogen restaurant rewards the climb with a Kölsch and a unique look.

Buildings

Remagen Bridge - The steel railway bridge was built during the First World War at the insistence of the German generals in order to be able to bring more troops and war material to the western front. The bridge became famous at the end of World War II, when a small vanguard of the 9th US Armored Division managed to conquer the bridge on March 7, 1945. The heavily damaged bridge collapsed on March 17th. Today's memorial tells the story of the bridge in the towers.
