San Benedetto dei Marsi was an important capital of the Marsi in Roman times. Known by the name Marruvium or, from the Greek, Marrubium, a name closely linked to the legendary Marrus, founder of those people. Marruvio dei Marsi was recognized at the time of the Roman Empire as a thriving municipality mentioned, among others, by Strabone and Pliny as «splendidissima civitas Marsorum Marruvium». The diocese of Marsi, founded according to tradition in the first century, had its bishopric in the cathedral of Santa Sabina (V-VI century) of which only the front facade with the valuable portal remained standing after the devastating earthquake of 1915. In 1580 the seat was moved to the cathedral of Santa Maria delle Grazie a Pescina, finally in 1924, in the cathedral of the Marsi di Avezzano. In contemporary times, the Marsica earthquake of 13 January 1915 caused over 2,300 victims in San Benedetto. The center rebuilt in the post-war period won the longed-for administrative autonomy in 1945.

In August. On the occasion of the religious feast dedicated to Santa Maria Goretti, the relic of the saint is brought to the Marsican town from Corinaldo, in the province of Ancona, where the house that hosts it is located. Very particular is the procession of motorcyclists who come to Marsica from all over central Italy to accompany the relic to the gates of the town.
