San Pellegrino Terme is a city of Lombardy in the province of Bergamo, in the heart of the Val Brembana.

To know

The Liberty in San Pellegrino Terme

The extraordinary architectural flourishing in Art Nouveau style appeared in San Pellegrino Terme in the first decade of the twentieth century, when the town was looking for a face suitable for its new role as a fashionable holiday resort, unconventional and suffused with delicate and persuasive voluptuousness.

The invitation was accepted by the emerging entrepreneurial bourgeoisie who had elected San Pellegrino as their worldly meeting place and here wanted to leave a tangible sign of its power with the creation of new and sumptuous architectural forms, entrusted to the expert hands of renowned artists, such as the the engineer Mazzocchi, the architect Squadrelli, the blacksmith Mazzucotelli, the glassmaker Beltrami, the cabinetmaker Quarti and the sculptor Vedani.

And so within a few years the buildings were built that still retain the echo of the bright belle époque: the bathhouse on the viale delle Terme, the drink room with the arcade, the grand hotel, the mineral water bottling plant, the casino, the town hall and some private villas.

These extraordinary examples of art nouveau were for some years the background to the worldly summer meeting of beautiful ladies, very elegant in their soft silk dresses, of young men and mature men who sported clothing of very soft colors. San Pellegrino then became a center of international renown, the ideal place for diplomatic conferences, the stay of illustrious political, artistic and financial personalities, the inevitable subject of worldly news.

It can be said that "passing the waters" in the Brembana spa town and making a bet at the casino, to try your luck at the gaming tables, was a must among the beautiful world of the time.

Then came the war, the fascist restrictions and another war. And the collapse of the assumptions that had made the fortunes of the town ended up emptying its "sacred" places of their original role, despite repeated attempts to re-propose them as a tourist attraction tool. And today their charm, which hovers over the modern urban fabric , seems to suggest an invitation to take steps quickly so that these majestic witnesses of a happy era return to play at least in part the prestigious role for which they were conceived.

Geographical notes

San Pellegrino Terme, located in the center of the Brembana Valley, is a beautiful and charming health resort and holiday resort, lying along the banks of the river Brembo, which divides the town in two, and is located in a natural valley, surrounded by reliefs whose highest peak is represented by the mount Zucco which reaches 1366 meters in height (called "Gioco" to distinguish it from the other Zucco of 1232 meters).

When to go

Below is an indicative table on when to visit San Pellegrino Terme. We recommend a visit between August and September, due to the mild and temperate climate. Rainfall is abundant during the summer months, with weekly thunderstorms, especially during the month of June.

Background

The first to settle in the area were probably the Orobi, people of Celtic origin, but the name San Pellegrino dates back to the eighth century AD, when the bishops in the service of Charlemagne consecrated and erected parishes in the empire. The inhabited center was dedicated to St. Pellegrino bishop of Auxerre martyr. The Parish of San Pellegrino Terme has a precious relic of the Saint.

While wars and revolutions are consumed in the rest of Lombardy, San Pellegrino remains peacefully isolated and only with the construction of the first rolling stock in the sixteenth century begins to flow more and more people attracted by the peace and tranquility that nature can offer.

At the end of the eighteenth century San Pellegrino developed as a spa, thanks to the sulphate-alkaline-earthy waters that flow at a constant temperature of 26 degrees, known since the Middle Ages. In the twentieth century the town was transformed into an elegant spa. The fame of the town increases with the construction of the Municipal Casino in 1904 and del Grand Hotel in 1905.

How to orient yourself

The two banks of the river are connected by five bridges, from north to south: bridge of Dossena (which connects the town with the hamlets of Antea, Santa Croce and Spettino), Ponte Principe UmbertoTHE (dedicated to King Umberto I of Savoy), old Bridge (dating from the 15th century), Camillo Cavour bridge and the bridge Gaetano Donizetti.

The center of the town is located on the western bank on which, going up the main road, we find the church dedicated to the Madonna di Caravaggio (to which the Sampellegrinesi are very devoted), the Parish Church (dating back to the eighteenth century), the Quarenghi Nursing Home (private clinic ), the Temple of Victory, dedicated to the Fallen, the Colleoni arcades and the thermal establishment. The Grand Hotel and the Municipal Casino stand out for their importance and grandeur. On the right side of the mountain you can see the localities Vetta, Aplecchio, Fallecchio, Botta, Paradiso and Madrera. All the following locations are connected by a funicular which makes intermediate stops on request. Instead on the left side there are the localities Antea, Spettino and San Gallo.
