Sankt Gilgen (also writes St Gilgen) is a town in the tourist region of Salzkammergut and is located in the land of Salzburg in Austria. It lies on the western shore of Lake Wolfgangsee, about 30 km to the east of Salzburg.
Understand
To go
By car
Sankt Wolfgang is at 30 km drive from Salzburg.
By bus
Since Salzburg (bus station near the station or Mirabellplatz), take bus 150 (45 min, all the 30 min on weekdays and every hour on weekends, approximately 6,6 €; hours).
Walk
If there is no road, you can come on foot from St Wolfgang (North shore, 10 km, with 150 to 200 m of elevation gain), or even from Strobl which is further away (east bank, 7 km moreover, no climb on this portion).
Circulate
The village itself is small enough to get around on foot or by bicycle.
To see
- 1 Wolfgang Lake (Wolfgangsee) – The lake can be easily enjoyed from St Gilgen. Within the village itself, there are at least two places from which you can go swimming. The walk towards St Wolfgang, before the path leaves the shore (4 km one-way), is really very beautiful. The path runs along the lake and is entirely pedestrian. You will be able to find places from where to bathe.
Do
- Trek – As in the rest of the region, various hikes of different difficulty are available. The official tourist site (in German, English and Czech) offers a number of hiking routes.
- To Sankt Wolfgang – If motorists have to drive around the lake to get there, hikers can go directly (10 km, 150-200 m elevation gain depending on the route). Some even do it by bike! The first section along the lake, before the trail climbs up and away from the shore, is particularly beautiful.
- 1 Zwölferhorn (south of the village) – This summit culminating at 1521m (almost 1 000 m difference in height) offers a magnificent view of the Wolfgangsee and Mondsee lakes. If you don't want to make the ascent on foot, take a gondola directly near the top. From Sankt Gilgen, this summit is a more accessible alternative to the summit of 2 Schafberg north of Sankt Wolfgang: if the view is less spectacular, going to Schafberg requires either going around the lake and then taking the cogwheel train, or taking a longer and more physical hike.
- Swimming in the lake – It is very pleasant to cool off in the lake in summer. There are two places in the village where swimming is more accessible, but you will find yourself near the pleasure boats. An alternative is to swim around the path towards Sankt Wolfgang. If you continue along the lake instead of following the trail to Sankt Wolfgang, you will find a little more secluded cove or two. Be careful of the tourist boats that occasionally circle the lake.
