Sapri is a city of Campania.
To know
He is known for having obtained the Blue flag, recognition awarded for its clean waters, the last of which was in 2018.
Geographical notes
Last municipality south of the province of Salerno, is located in the extreme south of the Campania, a few kilometers from the Basilicata, on the Tyrrhenian Sea, on a small plain of the coast overlooking the bay of Sapri, inside the gulf of Policastro which closes the coast to the south Cilento, and is surrounded in a semicircle by the mountains of the southern Apennines that rise behind it.
When to go
Given its tourist and maritime vocation, the best time to visit the city is summer, as you can enjoy both its sea and the evening events organized for summer entertainment.
Background
The city has very ancient origins and is considered the heart of the Gulf of Policastro. In Roman times the bay and its hinterland were held in great esteem; visited by Cicero who called it “parva gemma maris inferi” (small gem of the South Sea), admired and praised by numerous travelers of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries who appreciated the beauty of the places and the goodness of the local population.
It is known above all for the tragic expedition of Carlo Pisacane of 28 June 1857, which failed, removing the possibility of the establishment of a Murattian kingdom in southern Italy and paved the way for the Expedition of the Thousand; the enterprise is commemorated by an obelisk erected in the first centenary located in Largo dei Trecento, by a statue of Pisacane dating back to the first half of the last century in the municipal villa and by a bronze representation representing the "Gleaner" (female figure who collects the ears left on the ground after the harvest) suggestively lying on the Scialandro rock, ideally reaching out towards the bay of Sapri where the three hundred landed.
How to orient yourself
The main point of reference is the sea, whose promenade ideally connects the south part (where the Spigolatrice is located) with the north part (where the other points of tourist interest are) and the east part (the railway station can be reached by continuing straight for Via Cagliari); the railway station can be considered the eastern border of the part of the city that can be reached on foot.
The structure of the streets is such that the waterfront is accessible from any point in the city center.
How to get
By plane
The nearest airport is that of Naples-Capodichino, you will then have to continue with another means.
By car
Sapri is crossed by the highway 18 Tirrena Inferiore Naples-Reggio Calabria.
The regional and provincial roads that cross the municipal area are:
- Regional Road 104 - Sapri-border of the province of Potenza
- Provincial Road 16 - Bussentina-Caselle state road connection in Pittari-Casaletto Spartano-Torraca-Sapri.
The city has a port but there are no outbound or inbound maritime transport services.
On the train
The city is served by a Trenitalia station, which allows direct connection with Calabria, Maratea, the rest of the region and a large part of Lazio, until Rome, and the North with night trains, and the indirect one with the rest of Italy; regional transport allows connection with Naples, Salerno, Maratea and Paola.
How to get around
By public transport
In the summer months there is a shuttle service that allows the connection of the peripheral areas with the port.
What see
- Gleaner. Modest-sized statue placed on the rock Scialandro representing a woman who collects ears of wheat; it is visible from the land only from a point of a road that is difficult to reach on foot (several hundred meters are without pavement), while by sea it is visible only if you are taken directly to the rock with a boat from the port.
- 1 Observatory tower. Ancient tower of the Sapri Observatory, substantially well preserved. From August 2016 it is possible to visit and admire the landscape from the top of the tower (open in summer)
- Lighthouse (In front of the polyclinic). Maritime lighthouse of the city; it is not possible to enter the adjacent square as it is surrounded by a grating closed with a padlock.
- 2 Roman thermal baths (Next to some offices of the Campania Region). Remains of the ancient Roman baths; now there is very little left and the lighting system does not seem to work. To access, go up the stairs on the left from the entrance on the road.
Events and parties
Commemoration of the expedition of Carlo Pisacane. Every summer. Re-enactment in costume.
What to do
Being a seaside tourist destination, in the summer it is highly recommended to take advantage of it and go to the sea, the beach is half free and half with bathing establishments.
