Senda Sursilvana - Senda Sursilvana

The high-altitude hiking trail Senda Sursilvana leads from Andermatt in the Gotthard massif at the foot of the Oberalp Pass through the Surselva until after Chur. Five daily stages are suggested for the approx. 120 km. The route leads along the young Vorderrhein and can also be structured differently, the line of the Rhaetian Railway is never too far away, so that alternative stage locations can be easily reached.

First of all, it must be clarified whether the weather and snow conditions (there may be residual snow at high altitudes until June) permit the tour; Maps of the Swiss national topography are available, an individual map section can be ordered printed as "MySwissMap" or the maps can be found on the website of Switzerland as a hiking country can be viewed.

Since the number of beds in the accommodations in the stage towns is usually not overly large, it is worth making a reservation request.

getting there

The start and finish point are on the Rhaetian Railway line, respectively. the Matterhorn - Gotthard - Bahn, which operates the Oberalplinie. Stage locations can be easily reached by postbus.

Here we go...

The route is marked with yellow signposts with the light green logo of Route 85 or with the inscription Senda Sursilvana.

Andermatt - Sedrun, Hiking-Sign-T2.png; 28 km, approx. 10 hours

Oberalppasshöhe
View over Rueras to Sedrun

The first stage, with the only relevant ascent of the route of almost 1000 meters in altitude (afterwards there are only smaller counter-climbs down the valley) and a hiking duration of approx. 10 hours, is challenging and requires good physical condition. It can be shortened by letting one of the red trains of the Matterhorn-Gotthardbahn take you up to the 1 Stop Nätschen or right up to 2 Oberalp - top of the pass.

Sections:

  • Andermatt - Chilchenberg 1½ hours, Andermatt - Nätschen 2 hours.
  • Chilchenberg - Lutersee - Oberalppass almost 4 hours, over Fellilücke 4½ hours.
  • Alternative: Chilchenberg - Nätschen - Schöni - Oberalppass approx. 2 hours.
  • Oberalp Pass - Sedrun, 5 ½ hours

The path begins at the weapon place, respectively. the valley station of the gondola to the Gütsch. The Chilchenberg is conquered in a steep zigzag, below you can see the old Andermatt church, which gives it its name, next to the arsenal area. The protective forest and the avalanche barriers protect Andermatt resp. the entrance to the Schöllenen Gorge from avalanches. A nature trail was laid out on the ascent, and the mountain flora can be admired here, especially in June / July. During breaks you can enjoy the magnificent view of the Urserental.

On the 1 Chilchenberg At 1810 m, the path branches off towards the Nätschen train station. You follow this if you want to take the more leisurely valley route to the Oberalp Pass or if you have to take it due to the snow conditions at the Lutersee.

After another 200 meters of altitude, you cross the gravel road in the hole that leads up from Nätschen to Gütsch. The path shortens some of the hairpin bends, but ultimately follows the course of the gravel road to 3 Upper stafel below the Stöckli. The military reduit fortresses, the wind turbines and the mountain railway stations of the Andermatt-Sedrun ski area on the Gütsch testify that hikers are not the only ones interested in these altitudes ...

The path now leads below the Stöckli, on which parts of the Reduit fortress were also built, with little gain in height along the southern slope of the Strahlgand in the direction of the Lutersee. The Lutersee is circled in the north. In the 4 Front Fälli you can either go to 2 Lutersee get off and take the path down to Oberalpsee. Along the bank of the reservoir you can reach the 3 Oberalp- top of the pass.

Alternatively, you stay on the path, go around the "plate" and get to without any great height fluctuations 5 Felli gap. To the north one would be able to descend to Fellital in the canton of Uri. The path now leads down along the Hinterfellibach to Oberalp - top of the pass.

From the Oberalppass you take the hiking trail to 4 Pass tiarms, the Senda Sursilvana, after a short left curve, then continues at the same height into the Val Val, with only a slight loss of height the stream becomes 5 Aua de Val Val crossed far above the Alp. After a left curve after the bridge, the path climbs again, continues as a high-altitude path and crosses the Val da Stiarls. The plateau of Cuolm Val is crossed, after a hairpin bend below the cable car station, the path leads down to Milez, where you can stop at the Tegia las Palas alpine restaurant (a meadow path shortens the last bend down to Milez).

  • 1  Tegia Las Palas

From the Milez signpost, the path leads half-left to the cable car station and then into Val Giuv, the stream 6 Aua di Val Giuv is crossed on a bridge. After the bridge, the path leads after a left bend onto the ridge and then upwards, after a hundred meters of altitude it continues without any major incline. At the second time 6 Bench The path turns towards the valley and crosses the light forest in a few curves downwards. The route to Val Pulanera and Val Mila, which used to run on the heights, has been closed since 2004.

In the forest of 7 Uaul Liet the path makes a hairpin and leads through the Val Pulanera and above the farmstead of Malamusa into the Val Mila. After the little wooden bridge over the stream 8 Ouch da Mila the path leads slightly uphill. At the tar straw you turn left in the direction Sedrun, going down to the right you would get to Rueras. The path essentially holds its height and then leads down to it 1 Sum Praus, from here down the Rueras train station would be quicker to take a shortcut, or you could shorten it directly Sedrun on the stage of the Camino de Santiago 43 from.

The Senda Sursilvana, however, continues up the hill and leads into the valley of the Val Strem. On a wooden bridge the 9 Strem crossed and the path leads to the Drun river valley 2 Sedrun down.

There is also one in Sedrun 1 Coopto do the most important purchases.
