Sedrun is a place in Tujetsch, the highest parish in the Surselva, the Bündner Oberland.
To the political community Tujetsch, which includes the entire valley east of the Oberalp Pass, includes the following eleven fractions (order down the valley): Tschamut, Selva, Dieni, Rueras, Zarcuns, Camischolas, Gonda, Sedrun, Bugnei, Surrein, Cavorgia. Sedrun is the capital and center of the political community.
background
The Tujetsch (German name "Tavetsch") was from the 8th century. from the monastery Disentis populated out. On the Oberalp Pass migrated in the 12th century. the German-speaking Walser from the Valais, they founded their typical scattered settlements high above the valley floor. The parish church of Sedrun was consecrated in 1205, the church tower still dates from that time.
Before the expansion of the Gotthard Pass, after in the 13th century. the Schöllenenschlucht between the Reuss valley and Andermatt had been conquered, an important north-south cross-alpine route ran via Sedrun. It ran over the Chrüzli Pass (from Amsteg UR) and to the south via the Lukmanier Pass. In the north, a bowl stone and a menhir were found on the ascent and a worked stone near Sedrun, which suggests that the transition was already made in prehistoric times.
The Oberalppasstrasse was not built until 1862/63, the Oberalplinie of the Furka-Oberalpbahn began in 1911 and was not completed until 1926 due to the events of the First World War. This allowed winter tourism to develop. A ski club was founded in 1914, and the first ski lifts were opened in 1956/62; In 2014, the ski areas of Sedrun and Andermatt were combined to form the SkiArena Andermatt - Sedrun and connecting lifts were built in the Oberalp area.
Sedrun was also one of the points of attack for the NEAT resp. the Gotthard Base Tunnel. The tunnel runs deep below the village and to reach the construction site a shaft was driven into the depths; the construction site of the base tunnel could be reached with an elevator. The idea of an underground station to connect the Surselva to the Gotthard base line, the "Porta Alpina", was then discarded for reasons of cost.
