Shizuoka is a prefecture japanese, located in the region of Chūbu, in the center of the main island of Honshū.

Understand

West Shizuoka was once known as the province of Tōtōmi-no-kuni (遠 江 国), and under the name of Enshū (遠 州), to which the names of many companies and places are still mentioned in the region today. The eastern part of the prefecture was once the province of Suruga-no-kuni (駿 河 国), while Izu peninsula was itself a province, Izu-no-kuni (伊豆 国). The famous mountains are the mount hakone (箱根 山), the mount Amagi (天 天 山), the Mount Fuji (富士山) and the Mount Akaishi (赤石 山脈).

Ōigawa steam train
  • Ōigawa steam engine and cogwheel train Logo indicating a wikipedia link – The railway company Ōigawa operates one of the few steam locomotives still active in Japan. Take at the station 3 Kanaya (at a stop west of Shimada) the train from the Ōigawa main line and go to Senzu station. From there you can take the cogwheel train (line Ikawa; originally built to support the construction of dams on the Ōigawa) to the station of4 Ikawa to the north, at the foot of the southern Alps. Both train trips are especially beautiful during sakura season (there is a one-kilometer section called the “sakura tunnel”) and with fall leaves.
