Background
The first traces of human presence date back to the pre-Nuragic period and the Nuragic age; various nuraghi now in ruins arise in the outskirts of the town.
In the Phoenician-Punic period, settlements and fortifications were built in the Medau Casteddu area. In Roman times an aqueduct passed here that reached Caralis, today's Cagliari; a necropolis was also found.
In the Middle Ages this territory was part of the Giudicato of Cagliari and was included in the curatoria of Decimo. In its territory stood the castle of Acquafredda, built by the Marquises Lacon-Massa, the last judges of Cagliari. At the fall of the Giudicato (1258) the castle and the village passed to the Pisan family of the Gherardesca; Vanni Gubetta, an accomplice of Archbishop Ruggieri degli Ubaldini, a character immortalized by Dante in the XXXIII canto of Hell, was put to death in it. The castle passed under the direct control of the municipality of Pisa, and of the judge of Arborea, his ally, in 1295. In 1324 it was uselessly attacked by the Aragonese, who nevertheless had it a few years later, following the Aragonese conquest of Sardinia.
In 1412 the territory was given as a fief by the King of Aragon Ferdinand I the Just to Pietro Ogter. Subsequently Siliqua was incorporated into the marquisate of Villacidro and Palmas. It was redeemed in 1839 by the Bon Crespi di Valdaura, the last feudal lords, with the suppression of the feudal system, thus becoming a municipality administered by a mayor and a municipal council.
