Background
Prehistory and ancient history
The first human settlements in the territory of Decimomannu date back to the Neolithic-Chalcolithic. Between Decimo and Assemini we found evidence of a nuragic village, next to a restaurant in the area.
In 1879, during the work on the station, a necropolis was brought to light in which, in many tombs, Punic bronze coins of globular minting were found.
The inhabited area, as in other examples in the Campidano area, must have formed in a fabric originally constituted by a military castrum that evolved following various economic development processes that followed each other over time. According to Francesco Cesare Casula, the pitched battle of 215 BC took place near Decimo, as part of the Second Punic War, which involved the Romans, led by Tito Manlio Torquato, and the Sardinian-Punic forces commanded by Ampsicora. The clash was resolved with a crushing Roman victory.
The most important testimony of the Roman period is constituted by two bridges, the presence of which confirms that Decimo, thanks to its position, had a great importance in the field of communication since the period of Roman domination.
The remains of a bridge are found over the Riu Mannu, not far from the highway 130. From the ruins and also from the width of the river at the point where the structure stands, it is assumed that the bridge in its origins consisted of thirteen arches. The remains of the other bridge with a single arch, which many say of Roman origin, are located in the Su Meriagu area, less than a hundred meters from the Cagliari-Iglesias highway; the Riu Concias flowed through it, of which there is no trace.
Another noteworthy work from the Roman period was the aqueduct that brought water from Villamassargia to Cagliari. Hardly any traces remain of this work either.
From the Byzantine period, Decimo does not offer documents or monuments that are relevant in the nearby town of Assemini.
Medieval and modern history
In the Middle Ages the town belonged to the Giudicato of Cagliari and was the capital of the Curatoria of the same name. Many judges made their residence in Decimo. With the destruction of Santa Igia in 1258, the Giudicale territory was dismembered and the curatoria of Decimo was assigned to Ugolino and Gherardo della Gherardesca (after 1272-1282 Decimo passed to Gherardo's heirs).
During the Aragonese conquest of Pisan Sardinia, the only pitched battle between Pisan and Aragonese armies was fought on 29 February 1324, not far from the territory of Decimo: the Battle of Lucocisterna. This clash saw the Pisans defeated and the consequent territorial and juridical birth of the Kingdom of Sardinia and Corsica. Decimo remained in Aragonese hands until 1353 when it was temporarily occupied by the surviving Giudicato of Arborea during the Sardinian-Catalan war; return to the Aragonese two years later, in 1355.
It was then part of the Viscontea di Sanluri and, in 1519, under the Spaniards, it passed to the Barony of Monastir, remaining there until 1839, when, by now in the Savoy period, it was redeemed by the last feudal lords, the Bou Crespi di Valdaura. The sarcophagus of Violante Carroz, daughter of Giacomo, Viceroy of Sardinia, dates back to the Spanish period and is now kept in the town cemetery. The stone sarcophagus found in the church of San Francesco di Stampace, in Cagliari, was brought to Decimo by the Cao-Pinna family, who had purchased the remains of the church and the surrounding area.
Contemporary history
The war on malaria was supported by ERLAAS (Regional Body for Anti-Anophelic Fight in Sardinia) from 1946 to 1950, with the organizational contribution of the Rockefeller Foundation.
The pest control campaign was conducted by spraying all the marshy areas, the rivulets, the puddles, all the places where the Anopheles Labranchiae mosquitoes and their larvae could nest with DDT. It was a huge undertaking, since 32,000 people worked there for 4 years. From many tens of thousands of cases of malaria in 1946, it dropped to zero in 1952.
