  • Rites of Holy Week. Simple icon time.svgMarch or April on Easter weekend. The Archconfraternity of the Holy Mount is today the only institution that supervises the organization of the Holy Week rites, all thanks to the contribution of the Iglesiente population; we think of the transport of the Simulacra in procession guaranteed by the young people with the "Baballotti" dress (penitential dress that recalls that of the ancient Disciplinants) and we think of the many children who also wear the penitential dress. In procession (there are four Processions: Tuesday evening, Thursday evening, Friday morning and evening) the Confreres of the Santo Monte wear the imposing dress of "Germano" (from the Spanish Hermano = Brother), white in color, starched and garnished with black bows and finally the "Sa Visiera" hood that covers the face during the Processions as a sign of humility.
The Arciconfraternita del Santo Monte was born around 1500 and is the oldest association in the city. On 16 November 1616 it was aggregated to the Archconfraternity of the Gonfalone of Rome and raised to the current rank of Archconfraternity. The five centuries of life of the Sodality are marked by the assistance activity, yesterday with the hospital of San Michele (until 1500) and assistance to death row inmates (until 1850), today with assistance to people in need and with the organization of the rites of Holy Week, of clear Spanish culture, the first traces of which date back to the last decades of the 1600s.
  • Holy Tuesday. It is the first Procession, that of the Mysteries: seven wooden sculptures that tell the Passion. Jesus praying in the garden of olives (a real olive tree hoisted in the sedan chair with Mediterranean flowers and essences). This is followed by the Capture, the Flagellation, the Ecce Homo, Calvary, the Crucifixion and the Virgin of Sorrows. In this procession, as in all the others, the confreres parade in order and with a solemn step in front of the Virgin their protector. In all the Processions the only admitted association is that of the female of the Blessed Sacrament. The following day in the Holy Mass at the Church of San Michele, the branches of the olive tree and the ornamental flowers are blessed and distributed to the faithful.
Itinerary: The procession of the Mysteries at 19:00, Church of San Michele, Via Pullo, della Zecca, Piazza Manzoni, Vie Angioy, Amsicora, Rolfi, Giordano, Piazza Pichi, Via Verdi, Piazza Collegio, Piazza Pichi, Via Sarcidano, Piazza Lamarmora, Vie Martini, Azuni, Musio, Cagliari, Cavour, Manno, Cavallotti, Fountain, Eleonora, Piazza Sella, Corso Matteotti, Piazza Lamarmora, Vie Cavour, Manno, Piazza Collegio, Vie Repubblica, Don Minzoni, Piazza San Francesco, Vie Don Minzoni, Satta, Pullo, Church of San Michele.
  • Holy thursday. In this procession the silence is broken by the noise of the "Matraccas". The absolute protagonist is Our Lady of Sorrows who is looking for her Son Jesus, as popular tradition dictates, in all the churches of the historic center. Even the faithful as a sign of penance stop in the churches they meet along the historical route. Su "Nenniri" (wheat or legumes put to sprout in the dark) makes a fine show in the altars of the Reposition.
Itinerary: Procession of the Addolorata at 8.00 pm, Church of San Michele, Vie Pullo, Zecca, Piazza Manzoni, Vie Angioy, Amsicora, Rolfi, Giordano, Piazza Pichi, Via Sarcidano, Piazza Lamarmora, Vie Martini, Azuni, Musio, Cagliari , Cavour, Manno, Cavallotti, Fountain, Eleonora, Piazza Sella, Corso Matteotti, Piazza Lamarmora, Vie Cavour, Manno, Piazza Collegio, Vie Repubblica, Don Minzoni, Piazza San Francesco, Vie Don Minzoni, Satta, Pullo, Church of San Michele .
  • Friday morning. The historic district of "Sa Costera", in its "upper" part, becomes the stage and this Procession called, in fact, of the "Monte"; the ascent of Jesus to Calvary is staged and the protagonist is the simulacrum of Jesus with the cross on his shoulders, followed by Our Lady of Sorrows. The structure of the procession is the same as the previous day, with the matracconis, the drum, the crowd of children dressed as baballottis, the women of the Blessed Sacrament, i baballottis adults and the Germans escorting the Virgin. In this unusual and particular morning scenario, the solemnity and austerity of the costumes of the baballottis and of the Germans, with the historic charm of the oldest district of the city. In this procession, the children carry a small wooden cross in addition to the matracca, as a sign of penance.
Itinerary: Procession of the "Monte" at 9:00 am, Church of San Michele, Vie Pullo, della Zecca, Piazza Manzoni, Vie Angioy, Amsicora, Rolfi, Giordano, Piazza Pichi, Via Sarcidano, Piazza Lamarmora, Vie Martini, Azuni, Musio , Cagliari, Cavour, Manno, Cavallotti, Piazza Fenza, Vie Fontana, Lanusei, Straight, Spano, Baudi di Vesme, Mazzini, Piazza Municipio, Vie Duomo, Verdi, Repubblica, Don Minzoni, Piazza San Francesco, Vie Don Minzoni, Satta, Pullo, Church of San Michele.
  • Friday night. In the early afternoon, at three o'clock, in the privacy of the church of San Michele and in the presence of the Brothers alone, the ancient practice of "Su Scravumentu" takes place, which consists in releasing Christ from his Cross and placing him on the litter "Sa Lettera". It is a touching and moving practice, during which the entire Sodality tightens around itself in a moment of reflection and prayer of rare intensity. Preparations for the evening procession continue with the setting up of the litter, adorned with veils, tulle and lights that highlight its royalty; the dressing of the main characters of the Procession: "Is Varionis" and "San Giovanni e la Maddalena". The procession of the "Descenso" (Procession of the Descent of Jesus from the Cross: funeral) begins immediately after sunset and is unmistakable for its pompous and regal style. To the processional elements of the preceding days are added the two banners "Is Vexillas" that precede the "San Giovanni e la Maddalena", two children, strictly boys, wearing oriental-style clothes garnished with gold jewelry, "Is Varionis" who personify the nobles "Giuseppe D'Arimeta and Nicodemo" accompanied by two servants, with ladders and tools for the deposition. Even the clothes of these four characters, with thick beards and hats, are clearly oriental in style. Further back is the royal canopy with the ancient seventeenth-century simulacrum of Christ taken down from the cross [3]. Finally, the presence of the Addolorata following her son is obvious, escorted by the brothers in German dress. The imposing procession closes with a large wooden cross carried voluntarily on the shoulders by numerous faithful penitents.
Itinerary: Procession of the "Descenso" at 20:00, Church of San Michele, Vie Pullo, Zecca, Piazza Manzoni, Vie Angioy, Amsicora, Rolfi, Giordano, Piazza Pichi, Via Sarcidano, Piazza Lamarmora, Vie Martini, Azuni, Musio, Cagliari, Cavour, Manno, Cavallotti, Fountain, Eleonora, Piazza Sella, Corso Matteotti, Piazza Lamarmora, Vie Cavour, Manno, Piazza Collegio, Vie Repubblica, Don Minzoni, Satta, Pullo, Church of San Michele.
  • Easter Rites. Easter day is the turn of the Procession of "S'Incontru" (the meeting) between the simulacra of the Madonna and the Risen Jesus. The central Piazza Sella, which represents the living room of the city, acts as the stage. The two simulacra, which come from opposite streets with separate processions, meet one in front of the other and, after three ritual bows, continue together towards the Cathedral where the Bishop waits for the solemn Pontifical. Gifts, festive music and typical sweets follow one another along the playful path. The following Tuesday, in the Procession of "S'Inserru" (the Closing), the simulacra of the Madonna and of the Risen Christ, close the Easter Rites with a benevolent wish for the years to come.
