Elmas is a citizen of the Southern Sardinia, near Cagliari.

Geographical notes
Located in the historical region of Campidano of Cagliari, adjoins the neighbor Cagliari, whose city center is 12 km away, and with Assemini.
Background
The territory where Elmas stands was inhabited since prehistoric times. The findings date back to the recent Neolithic and the Nuragic civilization. The area shows the subsequent Punic settlement and later that of the Romans who built a mansio here.
In the Middle Ages the village of Semelia, part of the Giudicato of Cagliari, assumed importance in the curatoria of Campidano di Càlari, where the church of Santa Caterina was built, mentioned in a papal bull of Gregory VII of July 1079. In 1258 with the end of the Giudicato Cagliari, the area passed first to the republic of Pisa and then, after the battle of Lucocisterna (1324), which took place near today's airport, to the crown of Aragon who entrusted it to various families of feudal lords. From what we learn in the act of 1528 in which Charles V gave this territory to Isabella Sanjust, Semelia had depopulated while another nearby village, "Villa del Mas" was populated.
Elmas became an autonomous municipality in 1839 to be aggregated to Cagliari in 1937 and then regain autonomy in 1989.
