Assemini is a city of Southern Sardinia.
To know
Origins of the name
The origin of the name of the municipality is still doubtful and extremely controversial. Although various hypotheses have been advanced, today the thesis which refers to the Sardinia Map, created in 1589 by the Flemish geographer and cartographer Mercatore, prevails: in it is identified an "Arx Muni", that is "fortified village"; the indication would gradually become "Ass Muni" and later in "Arsemini".
Traditions
Ceramic
Assemini is considered "a town with an ancient tradition of ceramic". The first finds, which came to light in the Sant'Andrea area, whose finds of greater importance and in greater number can be dated between the end of III millennium BCculture of Ozieri and the end of 5th century BC It is very likely that the conspicuous production of ceramics (mainly casseroles, bowls, pans and jugs as well as ornamental artifacts) took place in particular courtyards called (in Sardinian) "strexiaius" (strexiu it's a pluraly offspring which means precisely crockery) in which there were wells for the extraction ofclay alkaline of which the territory is particularly rich, tanks for the decanting and smoothing, the lathe, canopies for drying artifacts and wood-burning ovens in unbaked brick cylindrical in shape (probably of oriental derivation). During the Middle Ages special corporations, called Gremi, disciplined the creative and commercial activities of the strexiaius with statutes and regulations, in order to impose the obligation not to vary the forms and not to modify the fixed fees. With the advent of the Spanish domination which lasted until XVIII century, the strexiaius they were included in the large courtyards of the Campidanese houses of which numerous testimonies remain well preserved today.
The tradition of ceramics, so deeply rooted in the territory and in the Asseminesi, also finds its expression in the municipal coat of arms which represents, among other things, an ancient amphora.
In modern times, Assemini produces ornamental crockery, enriched with naturalistic motifs (often inspired by very ancient models) or geometric, in relief or graffiti. The intended use of these artistic products is diversified as a part of these, however refined, is intended for daily use (especially crockery). the entire production has numerous elements in common that involve both the decorative motifs and the techniques of realization: this confers uniformity and originality to the production of artistic Asseminese ceramics in relation to other traditions. In 1995 the municipal administration gave life to the permanent exhibition-market of Asseminese Ceramics at the "Pilot Center for Ceramics", an exhibition space of about 500 square meters, in which many works by the most important Asseminese ceramists can be admired.
In the summer of 2007 the municipal administration, through the work of the Department of Productive Activities, inaugurated the "Permanent Exhibition of Art Ceramics" in the buildings adjacent to the aforementioned Pilot Center. The exhibition contains over 250 unique pieces of inestimable value that, in the course of over 30 years, the municipality of Assemini bought at the end of the various editions of the National Ceramic Competition held in the town. Initiatives of the same level can be found, in the national context, in reality as Faenza and Senigallia.
Kitchen
Sa panada
In the long and varied Sardinian culinary tradition Assemini stands out for the uniqueness and originality of some dishes, first of all the Panada appreciated and consumed, in some variations, throughout Sardinia. In most cases, production and consumption still take place in a family and private environment and the traditional preparation techniques, preserved in popular memory, have remained almost unchanged for centuries.
The panada, called in Sardinian sa panada (plural panadas), is a single dish consisting of a circular container of unleavened dough filled with embroidery braided (traditionally made without the use of tools) and then baked in the oven Tradition has it that the filling is made with meat (lamb or goat) and potatoes or peas, seasoned with saffron, pepper, salt, olive oil or lard is tomatoes buckets. The second and important variant involves the filling of eel and potatoes as evidence of the ancient and intense fishing activity of the town which has now almost disappeared; in more recent times they are prepared panadas also with peas, eggplant or other vegetables and meats, but all the variations are personal options and outside the popular tradition.
The bread
Unlike what happens in the northern areas of the island where the carasau bread it is the most consumed type of bread ever, in Assemini, as in most of southern Sardinia, other varieties are produced, including about maritzosu is about civraxiu. In the country a leading role is played by on coccoi, a variety of hard dough bread that is prepared for daily consumption or for special occasions and religious holidays as a function of votive loaves.
Geographical notes
Assemini rises in the plain of the Rio Cixerri, the Flumini Mannu and the Rio Sa Nuxedda just north of the Santa Gilla pond.
The municipal territory is quite large compared to the size of the inhabited center as it includes a detached administrative island. The island is mainly made up of uncontaminated woods immersed in the suggestive valley of Gutturu Mannu (Sardinian term for "large gorge") which in turn is part of the Sulcis Park: the area is an object of naturalistic interest as it is a natural habitat for species such as the Sardinian deer and the golden eagle, as well as archaeological for the discovery of numerous Roman remains that suggest the existence of an oppidum. Following the identification of a road that runs alongside the Flumini Mannu still visible, it is also assumed that the ancient center had relations with the Punic port of Nora.
Assemini is located in the historical region of Campidano of Cagliari and borders on Cagliari, Capoterra, Decimomannu, Elmas, Nuxis (UP), San Sperate (UP), Santadi (UP), Sarroch, Sestu, Siliqua (UP), Uta is Villa San Pietro.
Background
The numerous finds from the pre-Nuragic and Nuragic periods testify that the territory was already inhabited by man in the prehistoric period. It was a village that probably already existed in the Carthaginian and certainly Roman times.
In the Middle Ages it belonged to the Giudicato of Cagliari and was part of the curatoria of the Campidano of Cagliari, also known as of Civita. It then passed under the control of the Republic of Pisa. When the Aragonese in 1355 convened the first parliament in Cagliari, Assemini had its representatives and some privileges. Subsequently it passed to the County of Quirra, a fief of the Carroz family, transformed into a marquisate in 1606 under the Centelles, being part of the Barony of San Michele. It was redeemed in 1839 to the Osorio, who had succeeded the Centelles.
