The oldest human settlements in the territory of Sestu date back to the third millennium BC. Few traces (domestic pottery) Carthaginian, datable to the third century BC, have been found in the Punic-Roman necropolis of Corso Italia.

In other areas of the city, coins dating back to the period of Caligula and Domitian have also been found, a Roman funerary stone, a buckle and the Roman milestone on which the name of the site is explained. The name of the city dates back to Roman times and originates from the position it had along the route of the road that led from Cagliari to Porto Torres: Sexto ab urbe lapide, i.e. near the sixth milestone, found in the town with the inscription: Ad sextum lapidem.

In the Middle Ages Sestu belonged to the Giudicato of Cagliari and was included in the Curatoria del Campidano. After the fall of the Giudicato (1257) the village was included in the overseas possessions of the Municipality of Pisa.

Later it passed to the Aragonese who in 1324 gave it to Berengario Carroz. In 1363 the County of Quirra was created and the villa of Sestu became part of the Barony of San Michele, always in fief of the Carroz family.

In 1363, together with other villas, it became part of the county of Quirra. In 1603 the county was transformed into a marquisate, and from the Carroz family it passed to the Centelles; always included in the marquisate, it was then part of the barony of San Michele. Subsequently the lordship passed to the Osorio de la Cueva, who held it until the abolition of feudalism (1839) when it was redeemed by the last feudal lord Filippo Osorio. With the redemption from feudalism Sestu became a free municipality in 1840, administered by a mayor and a municipal council.

Today Sestu is a town that has about 20,000 inhabitants. It occupies a strategic position in a rapidly evolving territorial context. A center of strong attraction and growing socio-economic development, thanks to the construction of new residential, industrial and commercial settlements, it is constantly expanding, without neglecting the search for the right combination of modernization and tradition.
