Geographical notes

Background
The first human settlement dates back to the Neolithic (3000 BC). Various Nuragic, Punic and Roman archaeological finds testify that the territory continued to be populated even in the following millennia.
In the Middle Ages the present town was built by Camaldolese monks. The name Monastir seems to derive from the Catalan word for a monastery. Another theory, on the other hand, refers to the Sardinian term, "muristèni", which indicates the places dedicated to rest and supply of food for travelers. This is also supported by the fact that Monastir has always been an important point for those traveling along the South / North axis.
Monastir in the Giudicato period was part of the Giudicato of Cagliari, in the curatoria of Parte Olla, and, following the manu-military disappearance of the latter in 1258, of that of Arborea. After the period of Pisan belonging (having been ceded to the republic of Pisa by Mariano II of Arborea in 1295) it passed in 1324 to the Kingdom of Sardinia, dominion of the Aragonese. In the Aragonese period the villa was sold (1455) to the merchant Pietro Bellit, and his descendant, Lodovico Bellit, was created a baron: Monastir had since then the title of barony.
The town was redeemed in 1839 from Joaquín Bou Crespí de Valldaura y Carvajal, Conde de Orgaz, Castrillo y Sumacárcer, Marqués de Villasidro y Palmas, Conde de Serramagna, the last feudal lords, with the suppression of the feudal system.
