Background

The foundation of the first settlement dates back to the Roman period. In the Middle Ages known as Pauli, it was included in the Giudicato of Cagliari, in the curatoria of Campidano di Càlari. In 1258, after the dismemberment of the Giudicato, it was administered by Pisan officials until 1324 when, following the Aragonese conquest, it was granted as a fief. The plague of 1348 depopulated the village, in 1366 Guglielmo Canelles became the feudal lord, but he was opposed by the Arborean troops who occupied the territory until 1410. Pauli returned to the kingdom of Sardinia after the battle of Sanluri. In 1426 the village was granted to Dalmazio Sanjust who began a rehabilitation work that allowed the development of the town by favoring agriculture, especially wine. The feudal lord owned the town with the title of Count of San Lorenzo.

After the abolition of feudalism, in 1848 it became part of the province of Cagliari, becoming an autonomous municipality until 1928, when it was merged with the municipality of Cagliari.

It regained its autonomy on November 18, 1991 after a referendum and by means of a regional law. On that occasion, however, it went from 1,137 hectares of municipal territory to 650 hectares (it was deprived of the plain of San Lorenzo because a strip of land in the municipality of Selargius interrupted its territorial continuity). A legal case is still pending on this issue between the Municipality of Monserrato and the Municipality of Cagliari.
