Geographical notes
Isili is located in the historical region of Sarcidano and borders on Gergei, Gesturi, Laconi (Oristano), Nuragus, Nurallao, Nurri, Serri is Villanova Tulo.
Background
The name of the place has an uncertain origin; among the various hypotheses formulated by scholars, the one that leads back to the most ancient history was proposed by prof. Raffaele Sardella, who believed that the meaning of the toponym could be traced back to the Sumerian ISI-LI, in which ISI means mountain and LI means pure, holy or even to be high. So Isili would mean "the pure mountain", "the high mountain". The territory has been inhabited since the Neolithic, as evidenced by various settlements and numerous domus de janas. Later it was colonized by the Romans, who took it away from Carthaginian influence in the 2nd century BC. Important Roman settlements are present in the area bordering Nurallao, where the ancient Bidda Beccia (Borgo Antico) stood, and on the border with Nurri and Serri, in the area of Baraci, where the village of Biora once stood.
In medieval times, Isili was part of the curatoria of Siurgus in the Giudicato of Cagliari. At the fall of the Giudicato (1258) it passed to the Pisans, and subsequently (1324) to the Aragonese who granted it as a fief to the Carroz family. It was then joined to the marquisate of Mandas, transformed into a duchy in 1603, a fiefdom of Don Pedro Maza de Carroz Ladron and subsequently of the Hurtado de Mendoza, the Massa de Alcantara, the Lopez de Zuniga and finally the Telles Giron, from whom it was redeemed in 1839. with the suppression of the feudal system.
