Geographical notes

Las Plassas is located in Marmilla and borders on Barumini, Pauli Arbarei, Tuili, Villamar is Villanovafranca.

Background

The town has ancient origins, its territory has been populated since prehistoric times. In Roman times it became part of the territory of the Colonia Augusta Uselis and a majestic temple to Jupiter was built there by its inhabitants, then called Uneritani; this is testified by an epigraph currently exhibited at the MudA (Municipal Multimedia Museum of the Kingdom of Arborea).

In the Middle Ages the village was part of the curadorìa of Marmilla (medieval administrative district) in the Giudicato of Arborea and in its territory a castle was built which was part of the southern curtain of the arborense kingdom.

The fourteenth-century events of this village and the castle are told in a compelling and immersive way in the rooms of the MudA, multimedia museum of the kingdom of Arborea.

Starting from 1410, with the fall of the Giudicato, its territory was conquered by the Aragonese and became part of the Kingdom of Sardinia and from 1420 it was given first to the de Montcada, then to the Royg; in 1477 it passed to the Besalù, under whom it was constituted in Baronìa di Las Plassas. In 1541 it was purchased by Açor Zapata with a diploma of Charles V signed in Regensburg on May 6, 1541 (Archivio di Casa Zapata, d.f.1).

Don Açor II Zapata Montpalau, first baron of Las Plassas, former major of the port of Iglesias, alcalde of the castle of Cagliari, knight of Calatrava, ambassador of the Military Station to King Philip II in 1560. The barony included the castle, whose ruins are still visible today, and the annexed villas: Barumini, where the Casa Zapata Museum stands, and Villanovafranca. Since then the Zapata family (which was also related to the Ingarao and had taken the name of the town as a noble predicate, becoming Ingarao Zapata of Las Plassas) kept the fiefdom until 1839, when it was redeemed with the abolition of the feudal system wanted from the Savoy. The Zapata family lived in Sardinia until the end of the twentieth century.
