Background
Sanluri, like many other municipalities on the island, as evidenced by archaeological finds, was inhabited since very remote times and certainly from the Nuragic period. Its territory has known all the dominations, including the Roman one. But the most interesting part of Sanluri's history begins in the Middle Ages.
Despite being a small village, in 1300 it became the capital of the Nuraminis curatoria of the Giudicato of Cagliari. Due to its strategic position, the village was much disputed during the wars between the Aragonese and the Sardinians of the Giudicato of Arborea. In 1355 a famous peace treaty was signed between the Aragonese and the Arborensi. Also in 1355, when the Aragonese convened the first Sardinian parliament in Cagliari, Sanluri sent his representatives there. The town, which then enjoyed extensive privileges, was protected by a castle built between the 12th and 14th centuries, of which Ughetto di San Pace was castellan in 1358 and of which the judges of Arborea Mariano IV, Ugone III were lords years later. and Eleonora, at war against the Aragonese. In 1388 Eleonora gave it to the king of Aragon John I the Hunter to take it back two years later; the village followed the fortunes of the castle.
In 1409 the battle was fought between the Aragonese, led by King Martino the Younger, and the Giudicato of Arborea, led by William III of Narbona, the last judge (Battle of Sanluri). The battle was won by the Aragonese, and Martino had many inhabitants of the town killed. The outcome of the battle led to the end of the Giudicato and the birth of the marquisate of Oristano. Among the people who took part in the battle alongside Martino were Giovanni and Guantino De Sena: for the services provided Giovanni was created in 1436 by the king of Aragon Alfonso V the Magnanimous viscount of Sanluri. The Viscontea also included Laconi, Genoni, Nuragus, Nurallao and Decimomannu. Antonio De Sena, perhaps the son of Giovanni, later became viscount of this large territory. In 1470 the castle and the village fall into the hands of Leonardo Alagon, Marquis of Oristano, who had beaten the Aragonese in the battle of Uras; Leonardo killed Antonio De Sena. His son, Giovanni, however, fought in favor of Leonardo Alagon, and for this reason the Aragonese sentenced him to death and the loss of the rights to the castle and the Viscontea.
When the Alagon finally surrendered in the battle of Macomer (1478), the castle and the viscontea returned to the Aragonese, and King Ferdinand II the Catholic then gave them as a fief to his uncle Enrico d'Enriquez. However, he sold the fiefdoms to the nobles Pietro and Ludovico di Castelvì, from whom they subsequently passed to the Aymerichs of Laconi. The town was redeemed from Ignazio Aymerich, the last feudal lord, in 1839 with the abolition of the feudal system. A year earlier, King Carlo Alberto of Savoy had granted the Sanluri pond to some private individuals so that they could drain it and obtain arable land; the reclamation, which took the name of Vittorio Emanuele, was carried out and contributed to the economic progress of the town.
On 7 August 1881 a crowd of about 1000 people, especially peasants, exasperated by the increase in municipal taxation, showed up at the gates of the town hall where they were greeted by shots from the carabinieri who killed a pregnant woman unleashing the anger of the crowd who killed the mayor held responsible, in evening a battalion of carabinieri arrived and arrested a hundred citizens, of which 16 were sentenced to life imprisonment in forced labor.
At the beginning of the 21st century Sanluri was the capital (together with Villacidro) of the province of Medio Campidano: this role was maintained by the municipality from 2005 until the suppression of the institution in 2016.

The church was built around 1776 and stands on the remains of a medieval church, dating back to the sixteenth century, of which only the lower part of the bell tower remains, incorporated in the restructuring that took place at the end of the eighteenth century. Due to the size of the church, it is assumed that the consecrated building was built for an episcopal seat, i.e. a cathedral, but the church never had one. In 1776 the architect Carlo Maino was commissioned for the expansion of the church and the renovation of the old one, which has become the left aisle of today's church.
