Tourist Attractions

Grenen and its lighthouses
here Skagerrak (left) and Kattegatt (right) meet

Just a few kilometers north of Skagen is located 1 Grenen, the northern tip of Denmark. This is where the Kattegatt and Skagerrak meet, corresponding to the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. However, you shouldn't swim here due to the unpredictable currents, this is life-threatening. It is also not advisable to go knee-deep due to the undercurrents. The primary route 40 and cycle paths lead here. However, the paths only extend up to about two kilometers before Grenen, where parking spaces are available for a fee. A footpath leads over the dunes along a lookout point to the coast. Many ships can be seen from the vantage point, sailing from the Kattegat to the Skagerrak or vice versa, or lying in the roadstead. Every year around 120,000 ships pass through the northern tip of Denmark. People who do not want to walk to the top on the beach can use the Sandorms, use a trekker with a passenger car (adults 25 dkr, children 15 drk).

The sand on the west coast of Denmark is carried away by currents, while the beaches on the east coast become wider. Over the years, the northern tip has deformed and become longer. The northern tip with its currents and shallows posed a threat to shipping. Sea marks were set up early on. The 2 Vippefyr from 1627 is a wooden structure on a hill near the beach. At night a basket with firewood was pulled up on it. It was replaced by the one directly adjacent in 1747 3 Hvide Fyr a gas-powered lighthouse. Due to the growth of the headland, a new lighthouse had to be built about a kilometer further north, the 4 Grå Fyr. At 46 meters, the lighthouse is the second highest in Denmark and can be climbed.

The picturesque place is on the west coast 1 Højen or. Gammel Skagen (dt. old Skagen) with small yellow houses with red / white roofs. It was originally a fishermen's settlement. The oldest building dates from the 12th century. In 1340 the place was still the largest in the region, then the place was taken over by Skagen. Due to the location with the sea on three sides, there are special lighting conditions that attracted many artists to Skagen. There are still numerous galleries in Højen today. The lighting conditions should only be in Norwegian Åsgårdstrand be similar to.

The silted up church
The silted up church was buried in a sandstorm, today only the tower is visible.

On the road between Frederikshavn and Skagen lies in a forest 5 The Tilsandede Kirke (Eng. the silted up church). The former Gothic church was built between 1355 and 1387. Heavy sandstorms ensured that from 1775 the entrance had to be constantly shoveled. Twenty years later the church was finally abandoned and the nave was torn down, only the tower still protrudes from the mass of sand, while the outlines of the nave are partially depicted with wooden posts. The church was 45 meters long. The tower was almost 23 meters high and now only protrudes about 17 meters from the sand. Bells and some devotional objects are used in today's Skagen Church, built in 1841. The tower can be climbed (20 dkr.).

Råbjerg Mile
The shifting dune leaves a moraine landscape

The shifting dune moves further to the west 6 Råbjerg Mile forward about 15 meters per year. It is an approximately 120 hectare and 40 meter high sand hill with a sand volume of more than 4 million m³ of sand. The shifting dune will reach the Baltic Sea around the year 2150.
