Facts about Scania

History

Skåne is one of the areas with one of Scandinavia's oldest continuity of permanent residence. Tombs dating to 10,000 years have been found. Important functions for a central power arose early in Skåne, especially at Grove and findings made in Uppåkra shows that there was once an important temple and probably one of the oldest Scandinavian urban formations.

Until 1658, Skåne belonged to the core country of the Kingdom of Denmark, and many remains from the Danish period remain in the landscape in the form of castles, churches and important government buildings built up to this time. Cities like Kristianstad, Landskrona, Helsingborg, Malmö and Grove was founded during the time of the Danes.

The industrial revolution brought a boost to the landscape. Cities that were founded because they became railway hubs are Eslöv and Hässleholm.
