Geographical notes

Stimigliano stands on the top of a hill on the northern banks of the Tiber, facing Mount Soratte and the town of Ponzano Romano.

Background

The origins of Stimigliano sink into the mists of time; in fact, through many written testimonies, the presence of an ancient Roman villa is known. Already in the Middle Ages it came under the influence of the State of the Church.

In 1368, after a period of municipal freedom, Stimigliano came under the dominion of the Orsini family, which was responsible for the construction of the homonymous palace. Following the historical vicissitudes of Stimigliano are similar to those of the whole area of Sabina and north-western Lazio: Napoleonic wars, annexation to the Kingdom of Italy, partisan struggle.

How to orient yourself

The original nucleus is in the highest part of the hill, while the rest of the town and the port developed especially in the last century with the construction of the railway. Rome-Ancona The municipal territory is divided on a flat part, corresponding to the Tiber Valley, and bounded for some parts by the river itself, and by the hilly hinterland, characterized by numerous olive tree crops. of the center it can be observed that the Tiber makes a kind of screwing, "the fiasco", as it is commonly defined by the local population.

Neighborhoods

The most important areas of the town are the historic center, the climb of San Valentino, Nocchieto (outside the town, where the cemetery is located), and the Scalo.

How to get around

What see

  • 1 Church of Santi Cosma e Damiano. Of Roman origins, it knew its final form in the first half of the seventeenth century, with its three-nave structure. Inside, rich decorations with marble reproductions and a canvas representing the Christ mocked, from the Caravaggio school. In the eighties, during the renovation of the church, the facade was irreparably devastated with plaster and modern lines, and the Umbrian Marche earthquake of 1800 compromised the stability of the ceiling.
  • Orsini Palace. It has a structural origin around the fourteenth century, thanks to the sons of Giordano Orsini who were given power over Stimigliano. It is very likely that the Palace was built on the remains of an ancient Roman villa. It consists of three main bodies that are arranged in a "C" shape around an internal courtyard. On the right side of Piazza Vittorio Emanuele stands a tower which is visible from many kilometers away. You enter the building from an ancient ashlar portal, the apartments are decorated with frescoes from the 16th century, probably from the school of Taddeo Zuccari. From the courtyard you enter the noble chapel, inaugurated in 1595 as reported on the epigraph placed in the chapel itself. Inside you can admire a fresco representing the Flight into Egypt. The Palace is not currently open to visitors.
  • Old Town. The historic center of Stimigliano develops along a single main street, Corso Umberto I, with various characteristic alleys that extend perpendicular to the course, forming a kind of "Christmas tree" plan. the road ends on the small but suggestive Piazza Roma, where the town hall is located, and from where you can admire the panorama with Mount Soratte. Of particular interest is the building to the left of the town hall, also with important early Baroque frescoes, and the one to the right of Piazza Leone Orsini, entering the town. Both are not open to visitors. The whole historic center is richly decorated with plants and flowers, cared for by the local residents.
