During the Roman rule, Styria was inhabited by Celtic tribes. The eastern part of the country was part of Pannonia, the western part of Noricum. During the invasions the Visigoths, the Huns, the Ostrogoths, the Rugi, the Lombards, the Franks and the Avars settled or crossed it. From 595 the Slavs took possession of the territory, defeating the Avars. In 1180 Styria separated from the Duchy of Carinthia and becomes a grand duchy in its own right. In 1192 it became part of theAustria. After the hereditary subdivision by the Habsburgs, it became the central part of inner Austria (Innerösterreich). Archduke John, son of Emperor Leopold II, made a great contribution to the cultural and economic development of Styria in the period between 1809 and 1859 In 1918, after the First World War, it is divided into a northern area, which is the current Austrian land, and a southern area, called Lower Styria, inhabited by speaking Slovenian, which is annexed to Yugoslavia, and later to the republic of SloveniaIn 1938 it was annexed with the rest of Austria to the Germany Nazi of which it will become a Land. After the Second World War, with the division of Austria into zones of occupation among the victorious powers, it became almost entirely part of the area administered by the Great Britain.
