Position

The city is located in the southern part of the Silesian Voivodeship on the Vistula at the mouth of the Strumień canal (canal, tributary of the Vistula) and Knajka, in the immediate vicinity Goczałkowickie Lake. In the vicinity, in the area of the Strumień and Oh, miss there was a large number of swamps, ponds and wetlands, which gave the area its name Frog's Country. The stream (the capital of the "Frog's Country", also has its own mascot with the graceful name "Żabik", which is to symbolize Frog Country) is one of the northernmost towns in Cieszyn Silesia.

History

The village of Strumień was first mentioned in 1407 as Swarchenvassir. The village was then owned by the Kornic family. Then the Strumień became the property of a certain Sobek of Kornice (1430-1446) and Machno Ogrozieński (1450-1480), who in 1450 signed with Strumienie. On February 20, 1454, in the letter of John the Primate and Archbishop of Gniezno, there is a mention of the local church (or chapel), described as old and decaying, which is why the archbishop called for the construction of a new temple. On the basis of this letter, with the consent of Zbigniew Oleśnicki, the Bishop of Kraków, the church of st. Cross, considered to be the first parish church of Strumienia.

In 1480, the district of Pszczyna with Strumień came under the rule of Kazimierz II - the Duke of Cieszyn, who in turn gave them to his marshal Mikołaj Brodecki, who was in his possession until his death in 1518. Under the rule of Brodecki, the former village soon received municipal rights (1482). r.) and basic rights and privileges (1491) Approval of the city rights by Władysław Jagiellończyk in 1503 allowed the use of a seal and coat of arms. In 1517, the Duke of Cieszyn sold the Pszczyna district, after which the Strumień remained in the Duchy of Cieszyn. Weekly fairs and a fair were organized here twice a year. He also got a permit to build defensive walls, but they were never built.

Thanks to its location at the intersection of trade routes: from Kraków to Moravia and from Racibórz to Bielsko, the city was constantly developing. In addition, large amounts of fish were bred in the nearby towns (the first fish pond in Strumień was established in 1416), which were even sold to distant Wrocław and Kraków. On the other hand, craftsmen settled in large numbers in the town itself. In 1911, the stream was connected by a railway (narrow-gauge) with Chybie.
