Information

Geographic coordinates: 49 ° 38′50 ″ N 18 ° 52′03 ″ E

Until 1954, the town was the seat of the Wisła commune. In the years 1975–1998, the city administratively belonged to the former Bielsko Province. Historically it lies on Cieszyn Silesia.

According to the data from March 31, 2011, the city had 11,335 inhabitants, the city's area was 110.17 km², including 19% of arable land and 74% of forest land. The population density was 102 people / km². Due to its area, Wisła is the town with the largest area in Cieszyn Silesia (nearly 5% of the region's area). The city constitutes 15.1% of the area of the Cieszyn poviat.

From January 25, 1991, the city is divided into 7 auxiliary units - housing estates:

The Vistula is located in the depths of the Silesian Beskids, in the north it neighbors with the commune of Brenna and I retreated, in the northeast with Szczyrk, in the east with Lipowa commune, Radziechowy-Wieprz and Milowka, in the south of the commune of Istebna, in the west with Czechs.

The center of the Vistula River is located at an altitude of 430 m above sea level. The surrounding ridges rise up the valleys by 300 to 600 m.

The highest elevations: Barania Góra (1220 m above sea level) and Great Cone (978 m above sea level).

Streams flow out of the springs on Barania Góra Black and Biała Wisełkawhich, after merging and receiving the waters of the Malinka stream, form the Vistula - the largest river in Poland. In 1843 he visited the springs of the Vistula Wincenty Pol - geographer and poet in one person. Tours of this type became even more popular in the second half of the 19th century.

History

From the second half of the nineteenth century, the Vistula and its vicinity were visited by travelers and later holidaymakers. A native of RadomBogumił Hoff. That associate Oskar Kolberg, a researcher of folk culture, visited the village in 1882 and, delighted with its charm, began to promote its values in the press and among friends. In 1885 he built the first holiday villa, "Warszawa".

Then the Warsaw scientist, inventor, philosopher and psychologist - dr hab. Julian Ochorowicz. There he built a brick guesthouse "Ochorowiczówka", which exists to this day at ul. Ochorowicz (in the Districts). He ran a psychological practice there. Later, he built several more wooden boarding houses, for example: "Maja", "Sokół" and "Placówka". He lived here with breaks until 1913, running, among others, your parapsychological experiments. In the years 1909 - 1912 she also lived here Stanisław Tomczyk - Ochorowicz's famous "medium".

In July 1896, Julian Ochorowicz, who was in charge of a psychological practice, came - for one day - Maria Konopnickawhich then stopped without suspecting in Jaworze looking for a room for a longer stay. The primitive conditions that prevailed there, however, discouraged her, because in a letter to her daughter of July 17, she wrote: “First thing, after all, to the Vistula, because it's cheap. And it is true that it is completely cheap, but the rooms are completely under the roof, without soffits, so that the resin melts on the beams from the heat ”.

A few years later, enchanted by the Beskid landscape, in 1902 Maria Konopnicka accepted the project of the Polish nation offering her a house in the Vistula. However, this did not happen, because the villa "Ochorowiczówka", which was planned to be purchased for the poet, did not meet the accepted requirements.

In June and July 1900 he stayed in Wisła Bolesław Pruswho lived in a wooden villa named "The Outpost" in memory of this event.

In the fall of 1901, he lived here Władysław Reymontwho wrote excerpts from his "Chłopów" in the "Placówka" or "Jaskółce" villas.

Economy

In the nineteenth century, the pastoral economy in the Beskids declined. This was related to, inter alia, with the opening of steel mills in Cieszyn Silesia (in Ustroń and Trzyniec) at the end of the 18th century, which needed large amounts of wood for their production. Prince Albert Sasko-Cieszyński started a new period of forest management in the Silesian Beskids. He started limiting the existing highlander freedoms. Gradually, highlanders were removed from the mid-forest meadows and brought from Saxony the forest service started the afforestation process, which in turn led to the complete decline of pastoralism. It survived only in residual form until the mid-20th century.

Wisła Czarne

One of the greatest attractions of the Vistula is the Residence of the President of the Republic of Poland "Zamek" (ul. Zameczek 1, tel. 33 8546500, www.zamekwisla.pl). In 1907, a larch hunting lodge of the Habsburgs was built on the order of the Archduke of Cieszyn, Frederick, in Zadni Groń, and above it, in 1909, a wooden church. After the fall of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, the Habsburg castle was deserted. In 1927, at the initiative of the Silesian Voivode, Michał Grażyński, it was renovated with the intention of making it available to the President of the Republic of Poland Ignacy Mościcki. However, shortly after the renovation, on the night of 23/24 December, the palace was completely burnt down. In the years 1929–1930, a new facility was built according to the design Adolf Szyszko-Bohusz and in the place of the burnt building, the Lower Castle was erected, and 200 m above - the Upper Castle. President Ignacy Mościcki visited the castle in Wisła for the first time in January 1931 and since then he has been eagerly inviting distinguished guests to the Vistula, incl. the Duke of Kent and an opera singer Jan Kiepura. During the Nazi occupation, the castle was turned into a representative and recreation center for officers and officials of the Third Reich. In 1945, the castle became the residence of the head of the Polish state again, then - in the 1980s, it was a recreation center for miners of the present "Pniówek" mine, and then it was left by the president Aleksander Kwasniewski again taken over by the presidents of the Republic of Poland. On his initiative, a major renovation was carried out, all representative interiors of the castle were reconstructed, colorful polychromes by Andrzej Pronaszko and all preserved furniture and lighting elements were renovated.
