The Susten Pass connects that Haslital in the Bernese Oberland with the Urner Reuss Valley; The Alp got its name from Alp Sust, the uppermost section of the Guferalp. The pass crossing always had a regional character, the modern pass road was only built in 1939/45 and is only open in the summer months from June to October, after which it is closed in winter.
The Susten Pass was already begun in the Middle Ages, it remained due to its use as an alternative route when the Alpine crossings over the Gotthard or the were blocked GrimselGriespass route always of disorderly importance. Due to confrontations between troops from the Reformed cantons of Bern and Zurich and those from the Catholic Central Switzerland in the Villmerger Wars The transition was made around 1710 with the 1 Meienschanze secured. It was also in 1799 Meienschanze was again the scene of acts of war between the French and Austrian troops and was then razed by the victorious French.
In 1811 the cantons decided Bern and Uri the expansion to a driveway and on the Bern side it was completed in 1817 up to the top of the pass, on the Uri side the construction activities ceased after a long time after reaching the Meienschanze adjusted from the top of the pass, only years later the difficult section to Wassen was completed by the road.
In the years before the Second World War, the strategic importance of the transition became aware and the road was expanded in 1939/45 next to the route of the old road and the section to Wassen was realized with wide serpentines. The transition with a vertex tunnel was also implemented in this way for defense reasons.
Today the Susten Pass is mainly of tourist importance, in the summer months a post bus line runs over the pass until the winter closes around the end of October. A railway connection over the crossing was planned in 1898 with the granting of a concession for a Sustenbahn, this was never implemented for financial reasons; later projects were also rejected by the Federal Assembly.
Regions
The Sustenpass connects Meiringen resp. after passing the Aaere gorge the village Innertkirchen in the Haslital With Water in the Urner Reuss Valley. The transition forms a watershed between the Aare and the Reuss, ultimately both rivers drain over the Rhine North.

At the end of the valley the road winds in wide bends upwards; After the Gasthof Steingletscher, here the path leads to the Steinsee, there are a few more hairpin bends and the summit tunnel, which forms the top of the pass, is reached. A road leads to the inn on the top of the pass.
On the Uri side of the top of the pass, the road runs after a few wide serpentines in the Guferalp above the Meienreuss valley. The eight hundred vertical meters to the Meienschanze above Water the road runs with only a slight gradient. Galleries below the Fedenwald and some engineering structures had to be erected in order to move to the area Meienschanze to enable the descent to Wassen.
