Tradate is a city of Lombardy.
To know
Geographical notes
It is located in the province of Varese, bordering that of Como and a short distance from Mendrisio, in Switzerland.
When to go
The climate is temperate; once the town was a holiday resort for the Milanese during the hot summers, but it can be visited all year round. In winter, the city is sometimes whitewashed by dusting of snow which makes it particularly suggestive.
Background
The territory was probably already inhabited in Roman times; after the fall of the Roman Empire the area was part of the Duchy of Milan, and in 1071 the castle of Abbiate Guazzone was destroyed. In these years the Pusterla family strengthened their dominion over the area (which lasted until the 18th century), and in the 14th century built their own castle, which still exists today. At the end of the nineteenth century the village was linked to agriculture and textile activity, with reeling and weaving activities; the first important activity in this sector was born in 1879 in the complex of Villa Castiglioni. In 1905 the Frera motorcycle factory opened in the village, which contributed to the economic development of the area and to an increase in employment.
In 1927 the town passed from the province of Como to that of Varese and on 6 May 1928 the municipality of Tradate was united with that of Abbiate Guazzone, expanding its territory.
On January 28, 1958 the town of Tradate was granted the title of city.
