Appiano Gentile is a city of Lombardy.
To know
Appiano is an ancient village located on the edge of the Park of the Pineta of Appiano Gentile and Tradate, between the provinces of Como and Varese.
Background
Ancient age
In the thirties a first necropolis with a Bronze Age tomb belonging to the Canegrate culture was found in Monte di Mezzo. In the eighties, a larger Golasecchian necropolis was found in the locality of La Mortizia, which testifies to the transition phase between Celtic and Roman culture. The finds are exhibited in the rooms of the Paolo Giovio Archaeological Museum in Como.
Middle Ages
The village was part of the Seprio countryside which at the end of the 13th century was under the control of the Visconti. It became part of the Duchy of Milan in 1395 and, with the subsequent subdivision of Austrian Lombardy into provinces, the municipality of Appiano was included in the province of Gallarate.
Modern and contemporary age
Appiano was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy and merged with the province of Como in 1801. In 1867 the suppressed municipality of San Bartolomeo al Bosco was aggregated to the municipality of Appiano. In 1926 the municipality took the name of Appiano Gentile. In 1927 the suppressed municipalities of Bulgarograsso and Veniano were aggregated, then reconstituted in 1950. On February 28, 2009 the municipality of Appiano Gentile was granted the title of city by presidential decree.
