The country's name comes from Guarani and means river of colorful birds. The relief is mostly flat and the highest point is Cerro Catedral, with an altitude of 514 m.

There is also a strand that says that the name Montevideo comes from "Monte VI de O" or the sixth (VI in Roman numerals) mount to the West (from those who enter by ship through the Rio de la Plata estuary).

To arrive

Portuguese and Brazilian citizens do not need a visa to enter the country, for a stay of up to 90 days. Portuguese citizens need to present a valid passport, while Brazilian citizens only need to present a valid passport or original identity card. The document must be in good condition.

Bring the original document, as photocopies, authenticated or not, are not valid documents in Mercosur.

The Uruguayan roads, coming from Brazil from Chuí, are good, two-way, with well-maintained asphalt and some tolls in the range of R$ 5.00 each. From Punta del Este, passing through Montevideo and going to Colonia, the road is two-lane, modern, well sign-posted and with very good asphalt. The speed limit is 90 km/h on single lane roads and 110 km/h on dual lane roads.

Naphtha, or Uruguayan gasoline, is of good quality, but extremely expensive, at R$3.20 a liter. There is no fuel alcohol there. Brazilians should be careful to order "nafta sin plomo", or unleaded gasoline, the Brazilian standard for this fuel. This type of naphtha is called "Super 95".

Heads up: To enter Uruguay by car, it is necessary to have the car documents in the name of the driver (or companion) and also carry the "Green Card" (mandatory liability insurance, valid throughout Mercosur), which can be taken out in some banks and some insurance companies in Brazil.

In Uruguay it is mandatory to travel with the low beam on, even during the day, both on roads and in cities.

By bus

The country's bus services are efficient. Long-distance and international services depart from Tres Cruces station in the capital.

A good reference for long distances is the comparison of 1 U$ (Uruguayan weight) = 1 km. Thus, for example, distances of 400 km are usually close to U$ 400.

By train

There are suburban trains in the region of Montevideo and some tourist trains. Long-distance services were removed. In medium distance, there is a daily train to Florida, 110km.

With the

Food in Uruguay is expensive by Brazilian standards, whether in restaurants, supermarkets and fruit shops. Get ready to spend more than you're used to.

Be sure to try:

  • Milk cream
  • Alfajor (snow alfajores and Portezuelo Black or Mousse, which you can find in TATA supermarkets)
  • chivitos (pronounced "Tivitos") - Any restaurant or bar offers this food. It is a sandwich mainly composed of fine filet mignon steak, lettuce, tomato, fried egg, ham and cheese. May vary depending on type. Of course, always with more ingredients. The example cited was the most common you can find. Chivitos are accompanied by an abundant portion of French fries. It can be ordered with the plate, where the portions are bigger. Don't be surprised if a chivito on a plate cannot be fully consumed by 2 people.
  • cry - Sandwich with hamburger bread and sausage filling, lettuce, tomato, chimichurri, mayonnaise, olives, straw potatoes, etc. In the trailers of open markets and parks it costs R$ 6.00 (September 2011), including soda. It's very tasty and worth a meal well served.
  • hamburger
  • pancho (or Frankfurter) - Sausage (different from what is eaten in Brazil) with a lot of flavor that is usually served alone, with bacon, with mozzarella or both. Very cheap price that for one person depending on how much you eat can serve as a meal.
  • Empanada
  • Parrillada (or Asado, is the barbecue made on the grill using firewood, with traditional cuts and all kinds of "hachures" such as kidneys, intestines, stomach, thymus, black pudding and various types of sausages)

drink and go out

  • Kill
  • Patricia, Norteña, Pilsen and Zillertal beers are excellent.

The wine made from the Tannat grape is today the greatest Uruguayan gem. In addition to being a top quality wine, it is also recommended by cardiologists as a medicine to lower cholesterol due to its high content of antioxidants. Today there is a true worldwide frenzy for this wine. The bar El Pony Pisador, near the Teatro Solís, is one of the highlights of Uruguay's nightlife.

sleep

In the vicinity of Ciudad Vieja and Plaza Independencia, there are plenty of hotels of the most varied styles and prices. A cheap hotel with a great location and impeccable service is the Palacio, located on Rua Bartolomé Miter, one block from Plaza Independencia. Another good recommendation is the hostel. There are the most varied and affordable prices. With an approximate daily rate of R$30, some offer breakfast. For those who have no problem sharing rooms and/or bathrooms, this is an excellent option.

However, the natives recommend avoiding Ciudad Vieja at night. Better not to risk it!
