Four weeks in Sulawesi - Vier Wochen Sulawesi

This route Four weeks in Sulawesi leads from Macassar once through the Indonesian island Sulawesi to Manado. It can just as easily be traveled in the opposite direction (north-> south).

background

Compared to Java or Bali the number of tourists and the available infrastructure on Sulawesi is still low, so that comfortable travel is possible and one is still spared the excesses of mass tourism on the islands just mentioned. In four weeks, this route offers a mix of lonely beaches and islands, animal-Christian culture and natural spectacles (volcanoes and colorful underwater worlds). The four weeks suggested are a leisurely pace of travel. However, one should not underestimate the distances and bad roads!

getting there

Most travelers start from Macassar in the south-west (for traveling in a south-north direction) or Manado in the extreme north of Sulawesi (for travel in north-south direction), both of which have airports with direct connections to Jakarta and at least some other Southeast Asian cities like Singapore or Kuala-Lumpur.

Week 1 (Makassar, Bira, Sengkang)

From the port city Macassar from one moves eastward to the place Bira, which because of its long sandy beaches and diving and snorkeling opportunities off the coast cf. attracts many tourists and also locals on weekends. After a few days at the beach, head north Sengkang.

Week 2 (Tana Toraja, Tentena, Ampana)

Sengkang is just a stopover on the way to most travelers Tana Toraja or its capital Rantepao, where there is a milder climate and you can leisurely hike in the hills or study the unique burial culture. Further north, one arrives at the city in central Sulawesi Tentenawhich, in addition to exotic food, also has waterfalls and a large freshwater lake to offer.

Week 3 (Togeans)

After a day or two there the journey continues Poso to Ampana, where you can enjoy amenities such as fast internet or real showers for the last time before you hit the Togian Islands translated where one lounges between three days and several weeks (diving tourists) with fish, rice and two hours of electricity a day.

Week 4 (Tomohon, Bunaken, Manado)

Once across the equator by ship Gorontalo and from there to Tomohon with its national parks and volcanoes. The islands conclude the trip Bunaken with a breathtaking underwater world. From there (as well as from Tomohon) it is only half an hour after Manado.

Get along, security

In each of the cities mentioned, you can get along well with a few bits of English with the help of your hands and feet. The security situation is stable. The vaccinations that are common for Southeast Asia should be available.
