Terroir or Cru
Definition of a cru in Champagne
- Each municipality producing wines of different quality depending on their exposure and the land occupied by its vineyards, the notion of vintage applies to entire municipalities.
- The best terroirs (the most chalky) give the best grapes and each commune is assimilated and identified with a cru.
Classification of Champagne vintages
- The municipalities are classified according to a scale of wines which goes from 100% to 80% depending on the quality of the grapes produced.
- The Champagne terroirs are classified into three categories: Grands Crus, Premiers Crus Where Other wines.
- The wines from the communes, for which the quality of the grapes produced, is classified at 100% are Grands Crus; 90% to 99% are Premiers Crus; 80% to 89% are Other wines.
- This classification or scale reflects the quality of the grapes and not that of Champagne, and makes it possible to establish the selling price of the kilo of grapes to traders.
“Grand cru” terroirs
- This classification is the most prestigious designation in the A.O.C.
- For these villages classified as Grand Cru, the grapes that make up a cuvée must come exclusively from the plots of these villages.
- The information on the label of a Grand Cru is Grand cru, or in some cases maybe downgraded to Premier Cru.
- Of the 319 vintages in the champagne production area, only 17 are entitled to the appellation Grand cru.
