Wadden Islands - Waddeneilanden

SARS-CoV-2 without background.pngWARNING: Due to the outbreak of the contagious disease COVID-19 (see coronavirus pandemic), caused by the virus SARS-CoV-2, also known as coronavirus, there are travel restrictions worldwide. It is therefore of great importance to follow the advice of the official bodies of Belgium and Netherlands to be consulted frequently. These travel restrictions may include travel restrictions, closure of hotels and restaurants, quarantine measures, being allowed to be on the street for no reason and more, and can be implemented with immediate effect. Of course, in your own interest and that of others, you must immediately and strictly follow government instructions.

The Wadden Islands are located in the north of Netherlands.

This archipelago stretches from west to east and separates the North Sea from the Wadden Sea. In an easterly direction the area turns into the East Frisian Islands, in which Germany to hear.

The islands have a lot of dune area, beautiful beaches and the locals generally enjoy walking and spotting birds and other animals that live in the area.

Info

The islands are separated from the mainland by the Wadden Sea. At low tide, this shallow sea partially dries up except for stream channels. Since June 26, 2009, the Wadden Sea has been on the Unesco World Heritage List because of its great ecological significance.

Although the group as a whole is often referred to, these islands all have their own identity. There are also hardly any organized options for getting from one island to another without first going to the mainland and choosing a different boarding point for the boat. Only Vlieland and Terschelling are both from Harlingen and there is a boat connection between these islands in summer.

One way to remember the names and order of the islands is via the mnemonic:

Texcel Vlieland Terschelling ameland schiermonnikoog = TV BAG

Regions

The five inhabited islands are interesting to visit.

Wadden Islands
Texel
The largest Wadden Island with the most inhabitants. The island's income comes from tourism. Texel is the easiest to reach of all the islands. Part of the dune area forms the National Park Dunes of Texel.
Vlieland
Of all the Wadden Islands, Vlieland is the furthest from the mainland and it is also the most wooded.
Terschelling
Wadden Island with lots of art and culture. Terschelling also has many restaurants and nightlife.
Ameland
Ameland is a Wadden Island with beautiful nature, historic villages and farms and culinary delights such as rye bread, farm cheese, catfish and mustard.
Schiermonnikoog
Only 600 people live on this island. A large part of the island is covered by the national park of the same name. The beach of Schiermonnikoog is the widest in all of Europe.

You can also visit the small uninhabited islands of Noorderhaaks, Richel, Grind, Rif, Engelsmanplat, Simonszand, Rottumerplaat and Rottumeroog and this can be compared to an exotic journey.

Texel belongs to North Holland and the rest of the islands, with the exception of the easternmost uninhabited islets, up to the province Friesland.

Arrive

The most realistic way to reach the islands is by ferry. In general, the ferries sail to the Wadden Island, which is located on the other side from their view. The ferries to Texel depart from Den Helder, the ferries to Vlieland and Terschelling from Harlingen, the ferries to Ameland from Holwerd and the ferries to Schiermonnikoog from Lauwersoog. In summer, the islands can also be reached by ferry.

Some islands also have small airports.

Travel Warning

WARNING: Walking on the mudflats without a guide is life-threatening. You can easily get trapped once the sea level starts to rise again. You certainly won't be the first to drown by misjudging the rapidly rising tide.
