background

Wildemann is the smallest of the seven mining towns in the Upper Harz and has been part of the neighboring university and mining town since 2015 Clausthal-Zellerfeld. The place in the Innerstetal was founded around 1529 by miners; According to a legend, they sighted a "wild man" who lived at the place where later abundant silver ore finds were made. Since the 1990s, the population has fallen sharply. In 1990 Wildemann had 1,377 inhabitants, in 2010 around 1,000 inhabitants, so in 2018 there are only 786 inhabitants. Around 1945 the place had the highest number of inhabitants with 2000 inhabitants.
