background

Kurhaus and Kurpark

First mining in Altenau was documented in 1227. In the 13th and 14th centuries, a few smelter sites were built in the area around today's Altenau, which melted ores from the region's mining. Altenau is settled for the first time around 1500. The first settlers came from the direction of Osterode via today's Bergstrasse to Altenau and built the first houses and a new iron and steel works in Rothenberger Strasse. The first mountain freedom was issued to Altenau in 1554. In 1563 there were already three pits in operation. The at that time small place, which is called in 1580 as a mountain spot with 20 houses, receives the first church in 1588 and in 1594 the directionality. In 1617 Altenau was named a town. Since then, the city has had a centuries-old tradition of mining for silver and non-ferrous metals, but also iron ore and its processing (smelting), which goes back to the early 20th century. Especially in the valley of the Black Water, in which the road (K38) and the disused railway line lead to Clausthal-Zellerfeld, numerous mining dumps can still be seen, as well as on the Rose.

The pits closed around 1900. Since the beginning of 1915, tourism, along with forestry, has been one of the economic foundations of the city. The Glockenberg holiday park was established in 1970-1973. In 2007 the wave pool (built in 1970) was demolished and the Kristalltherme built instead.

Since 2015 Altenau and Schulenberg have formed the mountain town of Altenau-Schulenberg in the Upper Harz Mountains with around 2100 inhabitants, of which around 1800 live in Altenau and 300 in Schulenberg. Altenau is part of the well-known district Peat house.
