The Hellenistic city of Adranon it was founded around 400 BC. as a colony of Syracuse to protect the Simeto river from Dionysius I of Syracuse, in 344 BC The city was the scene of a battle between Timoleon and the tyrant Iceta of Leontini, in 263 BC the city passed under the Roman rule.
After a period of Arab rule, the city was besieged and conquered by the Normans in 1075 and incorporated into the diocese of Catania. It then passed under the reign of Svevi, Angioini, the Aragona family and the Bourbons. After the Bourbons suppressed the revolt in 1848, the region passed under the Kingdom of Italy only after the March of the Thousand under G. Garibaldi in 1860.

- 1 Mother Church Maria SS. Assunta (Adrano Cathedral), Piazza Umberto, 62, ☎ 39 095 769 2907. This church looks a little weird. A first Norman building was restored in 1572/92 under Duke Francesco II Moncada and had a three-nave plan and in 1750 a dome. In front of the church, huge lava stone columns were built at the end of the 19th century. According to Carlo Sada's plans, a new façade and a huge bell tower should have been built. In 1957 a "skeleton" of the planned reinforced concrete bell tower was erected which was finally removed in 1997 after long discussions. Inside, behind the main portal, there is an extraordinary 6-panel polyptych, which dates back to the 15th and 16th centuries.
