Background

Aielli overview

The first mention of the hamlet of Agello dates back to 814 as a possession of the Lazio monastery of Santa Maria di Acuziano, better known as the abbey of Farfa. In the Catalog of the Barons the village is indicated as a possession of Rainaldo, Count of Celano in 1280. In the 15th century the village was called Agellum in Latin, hence the spelling of Ajelli, transformed into Aielli. The town followed the fate of the other centers of the Marsica throughout the Middle Ages. Aielli was also severely hit by the 1915 earthquake that destroyed the entire Fucense area of Roveto. Severely damaged, it was largely rebuilt further down, near the railway station. However, the inhabitants of the upper village managed to defend the municipal seat and with difficulty in rebuilding the town.
