Altena is a city in Sauerland in the valley of the Lenne. Altena Castle, which towers over the town, was one of the most important fortresses in County Mark in the Middle Ages.
background
The city of Altena lies in the deeply cut valley of the Lenne in the Rhenish Slate Mountains. Due to the topography, the city is elongated along the Lenne and its side valleys. Initially a market town, dominated by the castle, the city has developed into a busy industrial location, especially for the metalworking industry, since it was opened up by rail. Further districts have been added through incorporations since the 1970s. These other neighborhoods are 1 Dahle (Altena), 2 Evingsen (Altena), 3 Old rye frame, 4 Green meadow, 5 Rosmart and 6 Großendrescheid.
