Geographical notes

The municipal territory, completely included in the Carnic Prealps, coincides with the valley of the Alba stream, to the left of the Cellina valley, just before the lake of Barcis, coming from the plain.

It develops in an east-west direction and is dominated, to the north, by the Chiarescons-Cornaget-Resettum chain (in particular from Mount Raut, 2,025 m., Maximum altitude), to the south by the more modest Mount Fara (1342 m).

It ends with the fork of Pala Barzana (840 m) which connects with Frisanco.

It is 43 km away from Pordenone, 63 from Udine.

Background

There is no evidence of Andreis prior to the year 1000; it is therefore not clear when the first permanent settlement dates back.

It is known that in Roman times the Friulian mountains were easily connected to the plain by river; it is therefore reasonable to assume that the Andreis area was at least frequented by shepherds and woodcutters; they could find refuge in the numerous caves that open up in the area, called in the local dialect andres (hence, perhaps, the toponym).

The village may have been founded around the fall of the Roman Empire, by populations fleeing the barbarian invasions that had devastated the centers of the plain.

Andreis is mentioned for the first time in a document of 996, with which Otto III of the Holy Roman Empire confirmed to the bishop of Concordia Benno rights over various localities including the villas of Navarons, Tramonti and Andreis. In the Middle Ages it represented a dependence of the parish church of Barcis, from which he freed himself in 1651.

How to orient yourself

The municipal territory also includes the hamlets of Alcheda, Bosplans, Prapiero and Sott'Anzas.
