Aubure is a place in FrenchAlsace and member of the association of Pays de Ribeauvillé and Riquewihr. It is the highest and most westerly place in the community association and the highest municipality in the Vosges. The place is located in the east of the Brézouard mountain range (1229 m), which protects against the dominant westerly winds, which gives it a microclimate - the basis of its economic boom in the 19th century as a climatic health resort. The place is surrounded by many forests and invites you to easy and varied hikes in every season.

background

Aubure Coat of Arms

Aubure was first mentioned in 1217 and was then part of the feudal estate of Riquewihr and the county of Horburg. The first church for the Protestants was built in 1556, the Catholics had to go to the church of the Abbey of Saint-Nicolas du Sylo near the Bilstein Castle (today the castle ruins) for worship. In the Thirty Years' War, a large part of the place was destroyed, the Protestants left the place or perished, so that the Catholics came from the neighboring valleys and settled in the place. From 1836 at the latest, there were four inns in the village. From the second half of the 19th century, Aubure became popular in better society because of its good air and became a climatic health resort. From 1880 tuberculosis sufferers cured here, initially in farms converted into pensions. Between the two world wars, sanatoriums were built for those taking a cure, which became less important towards the end of the 1970s due to the disappearance of this disease. The sanatoriums were converted into hospitals. Tourism has been a mainstay of the economy since the last century.

coat of arms

Blazon:

D'argent à un coq de bruyère au naturel posé sur un mont de trois coupeaux de sinople
("A natural black grouse standing on three green hills in front of a silver background.")

The three green hills represent the three valleys of Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines, Lapoutroie and Ribeauvillé, in the center of which the place is located. The capercaillie was once very common in the region, but is now dying in the process of extinction.

Images from Aubure
Catholic Church of St-Jacques-le-Majeur

There are some sights in the village, but (in November 2015) only a few images that can be accessed.

  • 1 1 rue de la Poste - The former inn with a bakery from the 19th century was extended in 1903 and now houses a center for the disabled (Arc en Ciel - "rainbow")
  • 2 4 chemin de l'École - Catholic rectory, built in 1864, also served as the summer residence of the Strasbourg bishop.
  • 3 6 route de Fréland - In the 1890s, the original farm was converted into a spa hotel that was still in operation after the Second World War. Today the restaurant Les Hirondelles is here.
  • 4 12 route de Fréland - The year of construction can be seen on the left archway of the house: 1767 and "LCMD", the initials of the builders. The arrangement of the rooms is unusual for the house, which was built in the traditional layout of the 18th century: the rooms for keeping animals are on the south side, the living rooms in the north.
  • 5 3 chemin du combatant - The former house Les Pins was one of the two private sanatoriums, in this case for men) of the Ltd. Doctor of the medical center at the time Salem, Étienne Heitzmann, which he had built in 1925. The terrace of the house, which is now closed, was the facility's promenade.
  • 6 8 chemin du combatant - The House Les Bruyères Heitzmann's women's refuge was built in 1927.
  • 7 Col de Fréland - Pass height at 837 m.
  • 8 Belvedere - This branches off here Route de Salem to the northwest, where after about 200 m you come across the Belvédère monument, erected by German soldiers in the First World War who were based in Aubure. It is a monument in honor of Duke Albert von Württemberg (1865-1939), Commander in Chief of the 4th German Army. Because of this and because of the wonderful view you have from here, it is also called "Herzog-Albrecht-Blick". It bears the coat of arms of Baden-Württemberg (deer antlers and lions).
  • 9 Salem - The medical center in question was built in 1891 by Albert Willmann, who was cured of tuberculosis after a stay in Aubure, as one of the first sanatoriums in France. In 1893 the deaconesses of Strasbourg bought it to house convalescent women and named it after the former name of Jerusalem Salem.
  • 10 7 route de Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines - This farm was built in 1792. Several details show the relationship to animal husbandry: a gable wall that is clad with boards facing the street as weather protection, stables and apartments under one roof, an open courtyard and brick house walls with offset corner stones.
  • 11 9 route de Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines - The former hotel Le Brézouard was opened in 1876 but, according to an advertisement, refused to accept guests suffering from tuberculosis. It was in operation until 1959 when it was bought by the Strasbourg bishop and sold again in 1970.
  • 12 Chemin des Jardins - From here (according to the tourist information) you have a beautiful view of the former Bethel sanatorium. It was converted from a simple farm into a women's sanatorium by the Free Evangelical Church in 1922. From 1945 to 1965 it served as a spa hotel for non-contagious lung patients and was closed in 1994.
  • 13 cross - opposite 19 route de Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines: The cross here commemorates the first Protestant church and school and the Protestant cemetery on this site, built in 1556 and destroyed like most of the town in 1635 during the Thirty Years' War.
  • 14 29 route de Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines - This oldest house in the village from 1600 shows a small window on the facade facing the courtyard with a Renaissance frame and without the removed central pillar.
  • 15 35 route de Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines - In this house was when Pension Kletty the first spa facility in the town as early as 1887. In 1945 it was closed.
  • 16 Chemin du Pasteur Metzenthin - Protestant Church: After the first Protestant church was destroyed in 1635, it was not until 1827 that the Lutherans and Reformed Churches agreed to purchase a farm from 1731 in order to house a school and a rectory and to add a church.
  • 17 Calvaire - the boundary stone Calvaire marks the border between the Ribeaupierre estates and those of the dukes of Württemberg, to which Aubure belonged.
  • 18 Église St-Jacques-le-Majeur - Catholic Church 1720 was the first cath. Church built, of which the nave is still preserved today. In 1813 the church was expanded to include the choir, sacristy and part of the bell tower. On the side of the church you can see a "noon line" to compare the clocks of that time with the position of the sun. The interior of the church contains a very beautiful altar from the 2nd quarter of the 18th century, which is said to have come from the Cistercian abbey of the Pairis Monastery originates. The altar shows a high quality carving.
  • 19 La Renardière Alsacienne - Chemin de la Renardière: The company La Renardière Alsacienne was a successful silver fox breed in the 1920s and 1930s. In 1933 the company had to file for bankruptcy for various reasons (global economic crisis, changed fashion tastes, etc.).
  • 20 6 rue da la Sapinière - The former Hotel Rübsamen was built in 1893 by patrons who gave it its name and who had been cured of tuberculosis. It was made in 1918 La Sapinière renamed and approved to admit non-contagious patients.
  • 21 Center Médical le Muesberg - The functional rehabilitation center Le Muesberg (Center de Réadaption Fonctionnelle Le Muesberg) was built in 1896 as the Hôtel de Muesberg and sold to the Landesversicherungsanstalt Alsace-Lorraine in 1903. This converted the hotel into a sanatorium and named it "Leopoldinenheim". It was renamed again in 1967, since then Center Médical le Muesberg (also Center de Réadaption Fonctionnelle Le Muesberg) is called.
