background

history

The city's first name appeared in 759 during the reign of Pippin the Short Radbaldovillare. In a document dated March 21, 1084, Emperor Heinrich IV of Franconia (1065-1079) gave the Bishop of Basel a piece of land called Rapoldestein. Around 1185 the bishop left it to one of his vassals, Egenolphe I of Ribeaupierre, the founder of this line of the noble family. Egenolph also adopted the coat of arms, three red shields on a silver background. Rappoltsweiler received city rights in 1290. Since the 14th century, the Count von Rappoltstein had the right to hunt and whistle as an imperial fief.

  • 20  Château de St-Ulrich. The ruins of the Ulrichsburg tower over the Strengbach valley at a height of 510 m. Until the beginning of the 16th century it was the residence of the powerful lords of Ribeaupierre and one of the most remarkable fortifications in the region.

  • 22  Château du Haut-Ribeaupierre. Hohrappoltstein castle ruins. 12th Century.

Notre-Dame de Dusenbach: Since the Middle Ages, this pilgrimage site has been the valley of the Dusenbach, a side valley of the Strengbach, and one of the most renowned and most visited places of worship in Alsace. It owes its creation to Egenolphe II von Ribeaupierre, son of Egenolphe d'Urslingen, the founder of this line of the noble family. Egenolphe II was the builder of the Sankt Ulrich Castle, which was built on the site of a predecessor from the 11th century. He took place as a crusader on the 4th Crusade (1202-1204). After his return he had a chapel built in Dusenbach and erected a statue of the Madonna there, which he had brought with him from Constantinople in 1204. Over time, the chapel was destroyed several times and, thanks to the willingness of the pilgrims to donate, it was rebuilt. The last building was raised in 1894, followed by the large church in 1903; it was inaugurated in 1912. Since 1904, when Capuchin monks settled here, thousands of pilgrims, hikers and tourists have been received here. It is best for visitors to leave their car in the Strengbachtal and continue on foot. The destination is reached after about 600 m.
